A composition (useful for attracting) containing (3R,6R,7R,10S)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol, (3R,6R,7R,10R)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol, (3S,6S,7R,10S)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol, (3S,6S,7R,10R)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol, and optionally a carrier material or carrier. The composition may also contain (3R,6S,7R,10S)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol, (3R,6S,7R,10R)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol, (3S,6R,7R,10S)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol, (3S,6R,7R,10R)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol where the composition contains a 3:1 ratio of cis-epoxybisabolenols:trans-epoxybisabolenols produced from (R)-citronellal. These compositions were based on the newly discovered aggregation pheromone components: (3S,6S,7R,10S)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol and (3R,6S,7R,10S)-10,11-epoxy-1-bisabolen-3-ol. The composition may also contain methyl(2E,4E,6Z)-decatrieonate. Also a method for attractingto an object or area, involving treating said object or area with aattracting composition containing aattracting effective amount of the composition.

A combination of volatile components which act synergistically to effectively attract yellowjackets in the Vespula species group is provided. A preferred formulation includes (E)-2-hexenal and linalool in the first component (A) and acetic acid and isobutanol in the second component (B). The two components are combined such that the vapors of the components blend to effectively attract the targeted yellowjackets. A dispenser may be utilized to release the vapors and may also be included within a trap to provide a means for monitoring or controlling the insects.

The novel sesquiterpene epoxides trans-(Z)-1-methyl-4-(1,5-dimethyl-1,4-hexadienyl)-1,2-epoxycyclohexane and cis-(z)-1-methyl-4-(1,5-dimethyl-1,4-hexadienyl)-1,2-expoxycyclohexane have been isolated from N. viridula adult males, and have been successfully synthesized. The compounds are useful for the production of synthetic sex attractants for N. viridula and its parasitoids.

Sesquiterpene epoxides and process for their preparation

A synthetic pheromone formulated from chemicals found in the airborne secretion of Podisus maculiventris, the spined soldier bug, was found to be highly effective in attracting P. maculiventris, a beneficial predatory insect, to desired areas for biological control of pests.
