An engine assembly includes a crankcase, a shaft, a housing, and a cooling fan. The shaft is coupled to the crankcase and defines a rotational axis. The housing has a sidewall that defines an internal space. The cooling fan is disposed at least partially within the internal space and is coupled to the shaft. The cooling fan includes a plate defining an upper surface and a lower surface. The plate is positioned to rotate with the shaft about the rotational axis. The cooling fan also includes a band that has an inner band radius and an outer band radius. The cooling fan also includes a plurality of reversed fins coupled to the band and extending from the upper surface of the plate, further radially outward from the rotational axis than the band.

An exemplary embodiment of the invention relates to an air cleaner assembly for a small multi-purpose, combustion engine as may be used for mechanically powering pressure washers, lawn mowers, go-carts, electric power generators, and the like. In some embodiments, the air cleaner assembly includes a casing having an air inlet and an air outlet, and the casing is designed to pivot open to allow a user to access the casing interior. In the casing interior, a filter support is designed to hold an air filter between the air inlet and air outlet. In certain embodiments, the air cleaner assembly also includes a hinge that is integrally formed with the casing. A releasable fastener is designed to hold the casing closed.

An exhaust deflector is attachable to a muffler. The exhaust deflector includes a housing having a flange that is attachable to the muffler, and an outer wall extending from the flange. The outer wall defines an aperture. A single piece mesh is in contact with the flange and cooperates with the housing to define a space. A low-density material is disposed within the space.

An exhaust deflector is attachable to a muffler. The exhaust deflector includes a single-piece housing having a flange that defines an inlet aperture, an outlet wall that defines an outlet aperture, and an intermediate wall that interconnects the flange and the outlet wall. A mesh is in contact with the flange and is positioned to cover the inlet aperture. A perforated member is sandwiched between the mesh and the intermediate wall such that the perforated member and the intermediate wall cooperate to define a space. A low-density material is disposed within the space.

The present invention provides a four-stroke internal combustion engine having reduced noise emissions. The engine includes a filter element having substantially flat inlet and outlet sides, a first housing portion, and a second housing portion coupled to the first housing portion. The first and second housing portions define an air chamber in which the filter element is supported. The second housing portion includes an interior surface, at least one protrusion to space the inlet side of the filter element from the interior surface, and an air passageway. The outlet of the air passageway is positioned adjacent the interior surface to deliver air to the air chamber between the interior surface and the inlet side of the filter element. A ratio of the volume of the air chamber to the length of the air passageway is between about 5 inand about 20 in.
