A system for heating a selected section of a conductive ribbon comprises a non-conductive base and conducting pads. Further, the system comprises a variable voltage power supply electrically coupled to the conducting pads and a sensor. A processor is programmed to enable the variable power supply to produce a voltage signal across the conducting pads to cause the selected section, which includes a biological sample and is clamped to the non-conductive base via the conducting pads, to heat up. The processor receives, from the sensor, an electrical measurement. A correction for the voltage signal is computed based on the measurement to achieve a desired temperature, wherein the desired temperature is for processing the biological sample and the correction accounts for a variance in the selected section. The applied voltage signal is adjusted based upon the correction to regulate the selected section of at the desired temperature for a time.

Systems and methods of heating a conductive ribbon for sample collection and/or sample processing comprises coupling conducting pads to the conductive ribbon, applying a signal across the conducting pads to cause the conductive ribbon to heat up, taking a measurement of at least one electrical property associated with the conductive ribbon in response to the applied signal, computing a correction for the applied signal to achieve a desired temperature suitable for fixing a sample to the heated conductive ribbon, and adjusting the applied signal to regulate the heat of the conductive ribbon to the desired temperature for a predetermined time.

A device comprises a reactive semiconductor bridge including a conductive metal, a reactive material, and an overcoat. When a high current passes through the reactive semiconductor bridge, the conductive metal vaporizes into a high temperature plasma. The reactive material is coupled to the conductive metal such that the conductive metal experiences an exothermic reaction to the plasma. When the conductive metal turns to plasma, the overcoat material absorbs at least a part of the exothermic reaction of the reactive material and breaks into a plurality of particles that are propelled away from the bridge. A gap is disposed between the overcoat and a membrane, and an explosive material couples to the membrane. The plurality of particles crosses the gap and penetrates the membrane to ignite the explosive material in response to being propelled away from the bridge.

An exploding foil initiator system comprises a substrate having a first side and a second side, an exploding foil initiator and surface mount pads. The exploding foil initiator is formed on the first side of the substrate and comprises a first contact, a second contact and a channel that electrically connects the first contact and the second contact. A first surface mount pad is formed on the second side of the substrate. As second surface mount pad is also formed on the second side of the substrate. A first via extends through the substrate to electrically connect the first contact with the first surface mount pad. Analogously, a second via extends through the substrate to electrically connect the second contact to the second surface mount pad.

A fluorescence-cued Raman identification system comprises a collection subsystem to collect samples, a reagent treatment subsystem to treat collected samples and a fluorescence imaging subsystem that automatically takes at least one image of the collected sample. The subsystems further include a Raman spectroscopy subsystem that measures the spectrum of viable organisms located from at least one collected image, a visible imaging microscope subsystem that provides a visual image of the particle analyzed by the Raman spectroscopy subsystem and a processor configured to perform image processing to locate viable organisms within the sample, which are targeted by the Raman spectroscopy subsystem. The processor further analyzes the spectrum recorded by the Raman spectroscopy subsystem to make a preliminary identification of the targeted organisms, which can be verified by an operator using the visible imaging microscope subsystem.

Biological and chemical collection and detection

A biological and chemical detection system is provided that detects and identifies biological and/or chemical particulates of interest. The biological and chemical detection system comprises a collector, a first optical device, a second optical device and a processor. The collector is configured to deposit particulates drawn from a fluid stream onto a sample substrate to define a sample area. The first optical device derives first data relative to at least a portion of the sample area, which is analyzed to determine at least one field of view and/or specific target location. The second optical device then interrogates the sample area at each determined target location, e.g., using Raman spectroscopy, to produce interrogation data. The processor determines whether the sample area includes predetermined biological or chemical particulates of interest based upon an analysis of the interrogation data and triggers an event such as an alarm or message if the predetermined biological or chemical particulates of interest are identified.

Systems and methods for biological and chemical detection

An endovascular prosthesis comprising a first end section, a second end section and a midsection. The midsection has a diameter less than the diameter of the first end section and the second end section. At least the first end section and the second end section have lateral support preferably in the form of a stent which may also act as anchoring. The reduced diameter midsection is provided with at least one side port which is adapted to be connected to a branch endograft to provide a connection between the side port and the native branch artery. The side ports are arranged to correspond with the native branch arteries and are provided with radiographic markers at their proximal and distal ends. The side ports with the radiographic markers provide an effective means of making the connection to the native branch by a branch endograft without having to align the side ports exactly to the branch arteries and without kinking of the side ports.
