The present invention relates to compositions, methods and kits for the treatment of bone particularly impaired or damaged bone.

Compositions and methods for treating bone

A method of synthesizing of a biocompatible and biodegradable polyurethane foam includes the steps of: mixing at least one biocompatible polyol, water, at least one stabilizer, and at least one cell opener, to form a resin mix; contacting the resin mix with at least one polyisocyanate to form a reactive liquid mixture; and reacting the reactive liquid mixture form a polyurethane foam. The polyurethane foam is preferably biodegradable within a living organism to biocompatible degradation products. At least one biologically active molecule having at least one active hydrogen can be added to form the resin mix.

Provided is a method for production of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite particles, and nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite particles produced according to the method. Although many materials have been used for osseous wound repair, no agent rrently available provides the surgeon with a predictable level of bone regeneration. Because they do not elicit elicit immunologic responses, and because of the disadvantages of obtaining donor bone, ceramic compositions such as phosphate-bonded alumina and similar ceramics have been investigated as possible bone substitutes capable of promoting bone growth. Since ceramic tricalcium phosphate is biodegradable it has been the subject of considerable research. Despite the research effort, the use of tricalcium phosphate ceramic materials in the regeneration of bone is still subject to improvement. A distinctive form of ceramic beta tricalcium phosphate, modified to augment bone regeneration is provided herein. It is readily implantable in a bone cavity to promote formation throughout the cavity of new bone to replace that lost through trauma, disease, respective surgery, and birth defects.

The invention is directed to a simple attachment for a surgical bone cutt or osteotomy saw. The invention is directed to an adjustable mold for use in fabricating bigradable polymeric bone replacements or implants. The invention consists of a box-like structure with two movable plates therein which can be locked into place permitting different size replacements to be fabricated. The interior walls are panels consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene which permit easy removal of a cured bone replacement. The construction and locking means for the movable plates permit the invention to withstand the pressures developed in replacement fabrication as well as to withstand the most commonly used types of sterilization procedures.
