An audio coding system encodes and decodes audio signals as a plurality of independent layers of coded audio data. A basic representation of the original audio signal may be reconstructed from decoding of a single layer of coded audio data. However, a more complete representation of the original audio signal is reconstructed by decoding additional layers of coded audio data. The coding system finds application with decoding systems of varying processing power, and in transmission systems having communication channels that are characterized by intermittent transmission errors and/or variable capacity. At an encoding system, an audio signal is broken into a plurality of frequency bands which are filtered, down sampled and independently coded. A decoding system inverts the coding process applied at the encoding system for whatever number of layers that is determined will be decoded.

Scalable audio coding system

A method and apparatus for performing signal processing using incongruent buffers. According to one method described, a maximum concurrent run length (MCRL) is calculated to indicate the maximum run length before any of a plurality of buffers is exhausted. Processing data for each of the plurality of incongruent buffers is then repeated until the maximum concurrent run length has been reached. The calculation of the MCRL may be a determination of which of the plurality of buffers has a lowest remaining time before buffer exhaustion or the least number of remaining buffer entries. A system described includes a processor coupled to memory. The memory contains a plurality of buffer counters and a plurality of memory blocks defining a plurality of incongruent buffers. The memory also contains a MCRL calculation routine for determining the MCRL count from the buffer counters. A data processing routine repeats manipulations of data in the incongruent buffers until the MCRL count is reached.

An audio stream is analyzed to distinguish silent periods from non-silent periods and an encoded bitstream is generated for the audio stream, wherein the silent periods are represented by one or more sets of canned encoded data corresponding to representative silent periods. There may be different sets of silent periods corresponding to different types of silent periods, where a particular type of silent period is selected based on some characteristic of the audio stream (e.g., energy level of the silent periods). One or more dynamically updated measures are generated for an audio stream. Processing is performed using the measures to distinguish silent periods from non-silent periods in the audio stream and the audio stream is encoded, wherein the silent periods are encoded differently from the non-silent periods. The processing is re-initialized during the encoding of the audio stream, if certain conditions are met. In a preferred embodiment, the processing is re-initialized if either of the following two conditions is met: (1) one of the non-silent periods is longer than a duration threshold or (2) an energy measure for the silent periods of the audio stream exceeds an energy threshold level.
