An optical modulator is disclosed that includes an optical resonator structure. The optical resonator structure includes at least one non-linear portion, the at least one non-linear portion comprising at least one radial junction region. The at least one radial junction region is formed between at least first and second materials, respectively, having different electronic conductivity characteristics. A principal axis of the at least one radial junction region is oriented along a radius of curvature of the at least one non-linear portion. The optical modulator includes an optical waveguide that is coupled to the at least one non-linear portion of the optical resonator structure.

Optical modulator from standard fabrication processing

A fiber-to-chip coupler includes a substrate, a waveguide on a top surface of the substrate, an optical fiber axially aligned to the waveguide, and a cap. The waveguide has a uniform region with uniform width and a tapered-waveguide region having a width that adiabatically increases from a minimum width to the uniform width. The optical fiber has a tapered fiber tip having a minimum core diameter, a cylindrical section having a maximum core diameter, and a tapered-fiber section therebetween. The optical fiber is located at least in part above the tapered-waveguide region, and has a core diameter that adiabatically decreases within a taper length of the tapered-fiber section. The cap extends from the tapered fiber tip toward the cylindrical section, is formed of a second material having a cap refractive index that exceeds a refractive index of the optical fiber, and includes a cap-region disposed on the tapered-waveguide region.

A fluxonic processor includes processes photonic synapse events and includes a transmitter that receives neuron signal and produces output photons; a neuron that receives a dendrite signal and produces the neuron signal from the dendrite signal; a dendrite that receives a synapse signal, and produces the dendrite signal from the synapse signal, the dendrite including: a dendritic receiver loop; a dendritic Josephson isolator; and a dendritic integration loop; and the synapse in electrical communication with the dendrite and that receives an input photon and produces the synapse signal from the input photon, the synapse including: a synaptic receiver; a synaptic Josephson isolator in communication with the synaptic receiver; and a synaptic integration loop that receives the synaptic receiver fluxons and produces the synapse signal from the synaptic receiver fluxons.

A primary single photon optoelectronic neuron includes a photonic synaptic input waveguide; an optoelectronic synapse; a synapto-dendritic electrical connection in communication with the optoelectronic synapse; an electronic dendrite in communication with the synapto-dendritic electrical connection; a dendrite-neuronal electrical interface in communication with the electronic dendrite; an integrator in communication with the dendrite-neuronal electrical interface; a superconducting wire in communication with the integrator; an axon hillock electronic-to-photonic transducer in communication with the superconducting wire; and an axonic waveguide in communication with the axon hillock electronic-to-photonic transducer and that receives the axonic photonic signal. Producing an axonic photonic signal by a primary single photon optoelectronic neuron includes producing an optoelectronic synapse electronic output signal; producing an electronic dendrite electrical output signal from the optoelectronic synapse electronic output signal; producing an axonic electrical signal from the optoelectronic synapse electronic output signal; and producing the axonic photonic signal from the axonic electrical signal.

Josephson junction circuits for single-photon optoelectronic neurons and synapses

A neuromimetic circuit includes: a primary single photon optoelectronic neuron; a synapse in optical communication with the primary single photon optoelectronic neuron; and an axonic waveguide in optical communication with the primary single photon optoelectronic neuron and the synapse such that the axonic waveguide optically interconnects the primary single photon optoelectronic neuron and the synapse.

Neuromimetic circuit

An integrated structure and method of formation provide a lower level waveguide having a core of a first material and a higher level waveguide having a core of a second material and a coupling region for coupling the two waveguides together. The different core materials provided different coupled waveguides having different light loss characteristics.
