A controller for a fuel cell based power generator includes a memory and a processor configured to execute executable instructions stored in the memory to receive a pressure in an anode loop of the fuel cell based power generator, wherein the anode loop includes a hydrogen generator and an anode loop blower, and control the anode loop blower such that the hydrogen generator provides hydrogen to an anode of a fuel cell via the blower and the anode loop at a controlled pressure. In further embodiments, the temperatures of the fuel cell and hydrogen generator are independently controlled.

A fuel cartridge includes an inlet manifold and a plurality of fuel beds containing a hydride material. A first end of each of the fuel beds is coupled to the inlet manifold to receive wet hydrogen via the inlet manifold. An outlet manifold is coupled to a second end of each of the fuel beds to receive dry hydrogen from the fuel beds. The fuel beds are laterally spaced from each other providing space for flow of coolant fluid therebetween. Valves may be included in the inlet and outlet manifolds.

Fuel cell based power generator

A water sorption device includes a catalytic combustor configured to, in a desorption state, combust a hydrocarbon fuel mixture to generate heat; a thermoelectric generator configured to, in the desorption state, generate electricity from a first portion of the heat from the catalytic combustor; and an adsorber configured to in an adsorption state, adsorb water from ambient air from an environment and in the desorption state, desorb the adsorbed water as vapor using a second portion of the heat from the catalytic combustor.

Atmospheric water extraction system

A fuel cell based power generator includes a fuel cell element, an ambient air path configured to receive ambient air and provide the ambient air across a cathode side of the fuel cell element, receive water from the fuel cell element and provide wet air to the water exchanger element, and a fuel cell cooling mechanism associated with the fuel cell element, separate from the ambient air path and configured to cool the fuel cell element.

A method includes receiving collimated light from an optical imaging system and dividing the received light into multiple bands of wavelength. Each band is refocused onto a corresponding diffraction grating having an amplitude function matched to a point spread function (PSF) of the optical imaging system. The light that is not filtered out by the diffraction grating is transmitted onto a corresponding pixel array. An image is reconstructed from data provided by the pixel arrays for each band. The intensity of light scattered by each diffraction grating may be detected, with the image being reconstructed as a function of an average value of detected intensity of scattered light used to scale the known zero-order mode profile, which is added to the image on the pixel array.

A thermal insulation device includes a first plate, a second plate formed to nest adjacent the first plate with a gap between the first and second plates, a porous material disposed between the plates, and a sealing layer disposed between the first and second plates such that the porous material is sealed from ambient at a pressure less than ambient. Multiple such sets of plates may be used to form an enclosure for a device that thermally insulates the device from ambient.

Thermal enclosure

A power source includes a container, a fuel cell stack disposed within the container, the fuel cell stack having an anode side and a cathode side, a hydrogen producing fuel disposed within the container and positioned to provide hydrogen to anode side of the fuel cell stack, and a pump disposed within the hydrogen producing fuel to circulate water vapor through the hydrogen producing fuel. A capacitor may be coupled to receive electricity generated by the fuel cell stack.

A cooling system includes a dual plate structure having a porous material disposed between the plates such that the porous material is sealed from ambient at a pressure less than ambient. A cooling device is thermally coupled to a mobile device supported by the structure and actively removes heat from the mobile device.

A device includes a container having a top plate containing an array of oxygen limiting pinholes and a chamber to hold a chemical hydride fuel, a fuel cell proton exchange membrane electrode assembly supported within the container between the top plate and the chamber, a first gas diffusion layer supported between the fuel cell proton exchange membrane electrode assembly and the top plate, and a second gas diffusion layer supported between the fuel cell proton exchange membrane electrode assembly and the chamber.

A power generator and method include passing ambient air via an ambient air path past a cathode side of the fuel cell to a water exchanger, picking up water from the cathode side of the fuel cell and exhausting air and nitrogen to ambient, passing hydrogen via a recirculating hydrogen path past an anode side the fuel cell to the water exchanger, where the water exchanger transfers water from the ambient air path comprising a cathode stream to the recirculating hydrogen path comprising an anode stream, and passing the water to a hydrogen generator to add hydrogen to the recirculating hydrogen path and passing the hydrogen via the recirculating hydrogen path past the anode side of the fuel cell.

High power fuel cell system

A power generator includes a container having a cross section suitable for wearing by a person, the container including a nano-porous insulation. A fuel cell and fuel cell cartridge are disposed within the container. Power management electronics are supported by the container and coupled to the fuel cell. A charge storage device is supported by the container and electrically coupled to the power management electronics and the fuel cell. A connector is supported by the container and coupled to the charge storage device to distribute power to one or more electrical loads.

Hybrid fuel cell

A device includes a container having a top plate containing an array of oxygen limiting pinholes and a chamber to hold a chemical hydride fuel, a fuel cell membrane electrode assembly supported within the container between the top plate and the chamber positioned to receive oxygen from the pinholes and hydrogen from the chamber, and a valve assembly positioned to regulate additional flow of oxygen to the fuel cell proton exchange membrane electrode assembly responsive to hydrogen pressure in the chamber.
