A method for filtering edible oils utilizing a backwashable filter assembly. A filter system having at least two filter assemblies may be utilized to remove bleaching clay and/or nickel catalyst from oil being processed for human consumption. The filter assemblies may be connected in a series and tandem manner to provide continuous and uninterrupted filtering of the edible oil. Each filter assembly preferably comprises multiple, substantially cylindrical filter elements having a porous filter medium which may be formed from polyaramid fibers. The filter elements are designed to withstand the elevated temperatures used in edible oil processing and for ease of cleaning during backwashing.

Method for filtering edible oils

The filtration system comprises a holding vessel and a filter for clarifying contaminated influent gas streams by passing the stream through the filter. The holding vessel has an inlet port for receiving the influent gas to be filtered and for draining the vessel and an outlet port for delivering the clean effluent for further processing. When the particulate matter has clogged the filter and increases the differential pressure across the filter such that it interferes with the normal filtration operation, the particulate matter is cleaned from the filter by isolating the holding vessel from the gas stream and introducing a liquid into the holding vessel and then by backwashing the liquid so that it flows through the holding vessel and the filter in the opposite direction of the influent gas. Backwashing the liquid from the holding vessel dislodges and removes the layer of solid particulate matter on the filter surface and the quantities of particulate matter trapped within the interior of the filter. In a preferred embodiment, the liquid is backwashed by introducing a controlled quantity of pressurized gas into the clean downstream side of the vessel and rapidly opening the drain port resulting in a hydraulic pulse which forces the liquid to flow through the filter in the opposite direction of the influent gas and burst the collected solids from the filter. As the gas head expands, the solids and remaining liquid in the vessel are forced through the inlet port and drain pipe for further processing.

In situ filter cleaning system for gas streams

A vent filter assembly may be disposed in a wall of a sealed waste container containing radioactive waste or the like and utilized for venting gases. The vent filter includes a housing coupled to the container. The housing includes a first opening communicating with an interior of the container and a second opening communicating with an exterior of the container. The housing defines a gas flow path between the first and second openings. A filter is coupled to the housing and disposed across the gas flow path such that gas flowing between the openings flows through the filter. The filter includes a porous metal hydrophobic filter medium. The components of the assembly may be fabricated from materials that are durable and resistant to deterioration due to elements stored within the container, as well as environmental elements. Further, the components may be fabricated from the same or similar materials or materials which are compatible with one another.
