A crankcase lubricant composition, method for improving the soot or sludge handling capability of a crankcase lubricant composition and a method of operating an engine on a crankcase lubricant composition. The lubricant composition includes a base oil and a reaction product of mono-succinimide dispersant and an acidic compound containing two or more pyrrole groups.

Lubricated surfaces, lubricant compositions for lubricating a surface, and methods for increasing antiwear properties in lubricants. The lubricated surface is provided by a lubricant composition including a base oil of lubricating viscosity, at least one metal salt of phosphorothioic acid, and an amount of at least one hydrocarbon soluble titanium compound effective to provide an increase in antiwear properties of the lubricant composition. A ratio of titanium metal to phosphorus in the antiwear agent ranges from about 0.3:1 to about 1.5:1.

The lubricant composition is substantially devoid of molybdenum.

A method for making a titanium-containing lubricant additive, a lubricant additive concentrate made by the method and a lubricating composition containing the additive concentrate. The method includes reacting titanium alkoxide with water in a reaction medium that includes a dispersant to provide a homogeneous titanium-containing additive product. The additive product made by the method is substantially devoid of acidic components.
