A continuous, solvent-free process for obtaining solvent-free, fine white powders of high molecular weight alternating copolymers of maleic anhydride and a C -C alkyl vinyl ether, without odor or taste, having the molecular structure (A&mdash;B) , where A is maleic anhydride, B is an alkyl vinyl ether and n is an integer indicative of the molecular weight of the copolymer, which comprises feeding alkyl vinyl ether as reactant and solvent in excess over the desired 1:1 mole ratio of A:B in the copolymer, molten maleic anhydride and a free radical initiator, continuously at predetermined feeding rates into a reactor heated at a reaction temperature of about 50&deg; to 100&deg; C., charging the reactor and withdrawing reaction product, residual alkyl vinyl ether and initiator from the reactor at the same rate as the feed rate of reactants into the reactor simultaneously thereby maintaining a constant volume in the reactor, stripping residual alkyl vinyl ether from the reaction product, drying the copolymer obtained of any remaining traces of alkyl vinyl ether, and recycling recovered alkyl vinyl ether back into reactor as reactant and solvent.

Method for preventing or retarding the formation of gas hydrates

This invention relates to a process for the purification of a crude liquid N-vinylpyrrolidone product which comprises (I) product rectification by (a) subjecting said crude product containing at least 0.3 weight % of impurities to a temperature of between about 1.degree. and 5.degree. below the freezing point of said crude liquid to form a vinyl pyrrolidone crystalline phase and a liquid residue phase in a first crystallization step; (b) separating said liquid phase from said crystalline phase; (c) allowing said separated crystalline phase to warm gradually so as to liquify said crystals and (d) subjecting the liquified crystals of vinyl pyrrolidone to between 1 and 3 additional crystallization steps, each carried out by gradually cooling the liquified vinyl pyrrolidone to a temperature above that of the preceding crystallization step up to a temperature of 14.4.degree. C. so as to form additional vinyl pyrrolidone crystalline and liquid residue phases with separation of vinyl pyrrolidone crystals and liquid residue phases and liquification of vinyl pyrrolidone crystals between each additional recrystallization step, recovery of N-vinyl-pyrrolidone product from the final crystallization step and (II) collecting said separated liquid residues from each crystallization step and subjecting them, sequentially, individually or collectively, to fractional crystallization in order to recover additional amounts of purified vinyl pyrrolidone product. The present process is capable of achieving up to 99.999% purity of vinyl pyrrolidone in about 98% recovery.

A free-standing, porous foam product comprising an integral network of PVP molecules hydrogen-bonded to H.sub.2 O.sub.2 molecules, optionally including a water-soluble gelling agent; e.g. hydroxyethyl cellulose; in an amount up to 60% by weight of the product, its PVP content being about 25-90% by weight of the product, and the H.sub.2 O.sub.2 content being about 5-24% by weight. In the absence of a gelling agent, the product has a bulk density of about 0.3 to about 0.5 g/cc and a porosity of about 60-70%. When a gelling agent is present in the product, its bulk density and porosity of the product is substantially reduced and, accordingly, it has a more foam-like structure and appearance.

A process for the production of PVP-H.sub.2 O.sub.2 products in the form of free-flowing powders is described in which a fluidized bed maintained at a reaction temperature of about room temperature to 60.degree. C. is contacted with finely divided droplets of a 30 to 85% by weight aqueous H.sub.2 O.sub.2 solution. Preferably the fluidized bed temperature is about 35.degree.-45.degree. C., a 50-70% H.sub.2 O.sub.2 solution is used, and the feed rate of introduction of the H.sub.2 O.sub.2 solution is about 5-50 g/minute/kg PVP present. The PVP-H.sub.2 O.sub.2 product preferably contains about 15-24%, preferably 18-22%, H.sub.2 O.sub.2 (1:1 molar ratio) and less than about 5% water.
