A tunable wavelength filtering device is presented in which the tuning mechanism is based on altering the incident angle to an optical thin film coating stack, or thin film optical filter. Rotating mirrors, such as Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) tilt-mirrors, are used to alter the incident angle of the optical beam coming from an input fiber, and also to aim or align the exiting beam to an output optical fiber. The optical thin film coating stack can be implemented onto a glass substrate, to form a thin film filter chip. The thin film filter chip can be fixed in place, and the incident angle and exiting angle of the optical beam is varied by adjusting the tilt angle of the two rotating mirrors.

Light emitting diode (LED) lighting fixtures are presented that use a low-pass filter to smooth out or eliminate discrete, step changes in LED light fixture brightness, that may result from the use of digital brightness level settings. Because some lighting applications require a fast response to changes in the set brightness level, and some applications require a slower response, one set of examples use a switchable RC low-pass filter circuit, with two or more selectable RC time constant values. Another set of examples use a programmable resistance integrated circuit to achieve a more continuously-variable time constant, for greater flexibility in adjusting the response time of the LED lighting fixture, in response to user brightness inputs. The user is able to control the maximum rate of change of the LED light fixture's brightness, in response to changes in the brightness setting.

Examples of electrical lamp fixtures for illuminating terrariums and stimulating the growth and health of reptiles, amphibians, and birds, and specifically to an improved, compact light emitting diode (LED) terrarium light apparatus are described. The lighting apparatus can incorporate one or multiple extended point source LED arrays, such as composed of high brightness LEDs of multiple wavelengths, that provide spatially and spectrally controlled light. A compact, high brightness LED terrarium light apparatus for reptiles and birds, comprises an array of multiple LED chips that provides visible light, ultraviolet light, and (optionally) infrared light, with separate control of the various spectral components.

A Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) actuator can rotate other, discrete optical elements that may be dimensionally large (especially in terms of thickness), may be of relatively large mass, and may be made of dissimilar materials (i.e., some material other than silicon). The rotating optical element may be reflective or transmissive. The MEMS actuator is used in multiple additional embodiments, allowing the integration of multiple optical functions into a single optical component, for a variety of applications. These optical functions include optical switching, optical attenuation, tunable optical filtering, the adjustment of the phase angle of an optical signal, and the detection or receiving of an optical signal or optical power level.

Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) actuator that rotates discrete optical elements

A tunable optical device uses a diffraction grating to angularly disperse a collimated beam carrying multiple wavelengths into multiple individually collimated wavelength beams, and then refocuses each of the individual collimated beams to its own focusing point on a moving plate that is located in the region of the focus plane. One or more reflective dots on the moving plate then selectively reflect particular wavelength(s) back to a first output port. The unselected wavelengths are transmitted through the moving plate, where they are then recombined and sent to a second output port. In a typical optical network architecture, the selected wavelength(s) could be viewed as the dropped traffic at a node of the optical network, while the unselected wavelengths could be viewed as the express traffic that is being passed to another node of the network. The device can also be used as a wavelength or beam combiner as well as a splitter.

A light source for providing light comprises a light emitting layer and a lens comprising a periodic structure therein that is periodic along at least one direction in a plane. The structure includes or is formed from at least two optically transparent materials of different optical indices. The lens is separated from the light emitting layer, and the radiation propagating from the light emitting layer within an angle to a line normal to the plane will be transmitted by the lens to a far field in an index-guided mode. The separation between the light emitting layer and the lens is such that near field radiation propagating from the light emitting layer towards the lens not within said angle to the line will be scattered and redirected by the first lens to the far field to thereby collimate the radiation propagating from the light emitting layer to the far field.

The color uniformity of a light spot is measured by providing an image of the light spot by means of a camera or camera sensor with sensor elements, each of the sensor elements capturing a set of three or more color component values that together define a set of pixel values at such sensor element, wherein the image includes a plurality of sets of pixel values. The method also derives for each of the plurality of sets of pixel values at a corresponding sensor element a first ratio between a first pair of the pixel values or of values obtained therefrom in such set. Preferably a second ratio is also derived between a second pair of the pixel values or of values obtained therefrom in such set, where the second pair is different from the first pair. Where the sensor elements used each provides a single intensity value instead of multiple pixel values of different colors, light is projected onto a spot of the camera or camera sensor along an optical path with a different one of three or more different color filters sequentially in the path. For each sensor element a first ratio is derived between a first pair of the intensity values of different colors provided by such sensor element or of values obtained therefrom and preferably also a second ratio is derived between a second pair of the intensity values of different colors or of values obtained therefrom provided by such sensor element different from the first pair.

High-throughput and high resolution method for measuring the color uniformity of a light spot

One embodiment of the invention is directed to a light mixing illuminator for illuminating an object, comprising an array of light emitting elements wherein at least some of the elements emit light of different wavelengths. An optical device is employed that focuses the light from the elements to a Fourier plane of the device, wherein the light emitting elements are arranged so that at least the zero spatial frequency components of light of the different wavelengths from the elements substantially overlap in a region at the Fourier plane. An objective is used to project the region onto the object. A mask is used that selectively blocks some of spatial frequency components of light from the elements without blocking the zero spatial frequency components of light from reaching the object.

Compact light mixing illuminator, utilizing the fourier transform of patterned solid-state surface light emitting arrays

One embodiment provides light along an optical axis. It comprises a substrate and at least one array of multiple LED chips without individual packaging supported by the substrate. The LED chips emit light within different wavelength ranges and are distributed laterally with respect to the axis over an area, the LED chips having light emitting surfaces for emitting light in directions transverse to the area. An optical element adjacent to the light emitting surfaces of the LED chips in the at least one array collects and directs light emitted by the LED chips of the at least one array along the axis towards a target. Another embodiment is directed to a method for providing multiple wavelength light for fluorescent microscopy using the above system. Electric current is supplied to the multiple LED chips, causing them to emit light of multiple wavelengths. The currents supplied to the multiple LED chips are controlled so as to control the exposure of fluorescent dyes with different excitation wavelengths wherein the light emitted by the multiple LED chips include wavelength components at such different excitation wavelengths without having to move the multiple LED chips.

A LED array spot illuminator for providing light along an optical axis comprises a substrate and at least one array of multiple LED chips without individual packaging supported by the substrate, wherein the LED chips emit light within the same or different wavelength ranges and are distributed laterally with respect to the axis over a light-emitting area. The LED chips have light emitting surfaces for emitting light in directions transverse to the area. An optical device collects and directs light emitted by the LED chips of the at least one array along the axis. An aperture passes the light emitted by the LED chips of the at least one array along the axis, wherein light collected by the optical device and passed by the aperture forms a beam of light illuminating a spot. Electric current is supplied to the multiple LED chips, causing them to emit light. Light emitted by the multiple LED chips that passed through the optical device and the aperture form a beam of light illuminating a spot. A distance between the multiple LED chips and one or more elements of the optical device is controlled to select a size of the spot.
