Disclosed is a process and apparatus for formation of high quality plastic sheet in a continuous fashion, wherein the plastic sheet produced is capable of use in a variety of optical and electronic display applications.

An improved optical light pipe for side-lit uses is formed from a core/cladding combination, optionally with a transparent jacket, where the core is preferably a cured acrylic polymer and the cladding is preferably a fluorocarbon polymer containing a very low level of fine particles which scatter the light uniformly along the length of the piping. Further light enhancement can be obtained with low levels of glass fibers or glass microspheres also present in the cladding. Chopped glass fibers alone at low levels in the cladding are useful for back-lit applications. The light pipe so formed is useful in signs, underwater outlines, corridor lighting in theaters, and similar uses.

Flexible light pipe for side-lit applications

A flexible light pipe consisting of a light-transmitting core, a cladding, and a sheathing is described which, by suitable choice of cladding and sheathing materials, exhibits a combination of good flexibility for bending and shaping whilst retaining good resistance to kinking or other interruptions which can adversely affect transmission of light.

A process for producing a cured composite and flexible light pipe, in which a molten cladding polymer and a crosslinkable core mixture are concurrently and coaxially extruded through a core mixture delivery tube of a coextrusion die, the extruded tubular cladding is filled with the extruded crosslinkable core mixture, and the crosslinkable core mixture is cured within the tubular cladding.

Process for cured composites and flexible light pipe, in which a molten cladding polymer and a crosslinkable core mixture are coaxially extruded through a coextrusion die, the cladding is filled with the crosslinkable core mixture, and the crosslinkable core mixture is cured within the cladding.

Flexible light pipe, cured composite and processes for preparation

A process is provided for modifying the residence time distribution of materials in an extruder which results in a residence time distribution comparable to that obtained in a continuous stirred tank reactor. An extruder is provided which has a section which modifies the residence time distribution of materials loaded into the extruder.
