In a pulmonary ventilation system, a filter arrangement useful as an input filter arrangement and an output filter arrangement is constructed to allow for changing or cleaning of the filter without interrupting or impacting the ventilation therapy and to limit the release of pathogens to the surrounding area or atmosphere. A preferred exhaust filter is constructed to function as a water trap and filter. Methods of operating the pulmonary ventilation system are also disclosed along with kits containing materials to construct an input or an output filtration structure.

Ventilator chassis

A ventilation system supplies a gas mixture that is humidified and heated through a proportional valve which is a fail closed and normally closed servo control valve positioned proximate a patient. The proportional valve is operated by a controller that regulates the pressure and the mode (e.g., high frequency, normal respiration, combinations) gas is delivered to the patient through a nozzle connected to the endotracheal tube. The nozzle has an exhaust connected to it and a pressure sensor through a pressure sensing port. The exhaust is a capped corrugated tube that is heated and perforated to allow air to escape, to muffle gas and respiration noises, and to trap moisture.

Variable flow and pressure ventilation system

A fishing lure has a battery-powered oscillator circuit positioned within a water-resistant container module that is removably inserted into a selected body module that is balanced to insure proper lure action even as fish-attracting sounds and motions are generated from the container module.

A disposable laboratory hood has a base, a left side, a right side and a rear side all formed of a coated cardboard laminate. A clear, transparent film extends between the sides to define an access opening through which the user may insert his or her hands to perform laboratory procedures. A front is secured to the base and is rotatable to cover the access opening to provide for a closed interior. A filter and a blower may be connectable if desired.

A clamping device for obstructing the flow of fluid through a tube is disclosed which may be electrically or manually actuated in response to an electrical signal from a condition detection means associated with the tube. The clamping device may also be actuated to compress the tube gradually, providing incrementally decreasing flow through the tube.

A catheter set (10) is used in connection with a blood flow monitor and calibration system (80) to determine the compliance C of a vessel according to the equation C=dV2/ (PE-PA), where dV2 is the change in volume of the vessel created by the change in volume (e.g., deflation) of a displacement balloon (30) adjacent to a catheter (14), PE is an estimate of what the pressure measured by a pressure transducer (56) or a strain gage (78) would have been but for the change in volume of the displacement balloon at a particular time, and PA is the actual pressure measured by the transducer at the particular time. The determined compliance is more accurate than that obtained through thermal dilution procedures. The determined value of compliance C may then be used in calculation of blood flow. In addition, pulmonary vascular resistance and systemic vascular resistance may calculated through procedures and in equations using the determined compliance without directly measuring the pulmonary capillary wedge pressure.

System for calculating compliance and cardiac hemodynamic parameters

An implantable structure for incorporation into the tissues of a body is provided which retains therein fluid substances or biological substances which produce, or cause to be produced, biochemicals deliverable to the body. The implantable structure is configured to provide insertion and removal of substances therefrom as needed. The implantable structure generally comprises a porous outer member configured to encourage ingrowth of vascularized tissue therethrough, and an inner member of selectively permeable material providing interior space for inserting substances therein and which is structured to prevent ingrowth of tissue therethrough. The inner member is capable of providing immunoisolation to the substances therein as required.

Implantable structure for containing substances for delivery to a body

A fishing lure has a battery powered oscillator circuit positioned within a water resistant container to power a coil and in turn a noise making plunger. The noise making plunger may also have an arm or a boot attached in order to generate motion within the water to act as a fish-luring motion. The water-resistant container is affixed to the shaft of a hooking structure or positioned in the vicinity of another lure or bait.

An extra corporeal support system has an inlet catheter which is positioned with its distal end in the right atrium or vena cava of the patient. A roller pump with an inlet pressure sensor positioned close to its inlet to sense the pressure in the inlet line which pumps the blood through the system to any output catheter positioned in the arterial system of the patient. The system has a shunt with blocking valves to block the flow automatically in the event of an unsafe condition. The system has a microprocessor based controller for automatic operation of the system components including a servo motor for driving the roller pump at a speed to precisely maintain the inlet pressure at a preselected point. The system includes a blood treatment device such as an oxygenator.

Extra corporeal support system

An implantable device for administering drugs or other substances to body tissues of a patient is disclosed. The device is designed to allow controlled ingrowth of connective tissue into the device, and a solution may be pumped or injected into the device where the solution is diffused through the ingrown connective tissue and out into the body.

A retrograde perfusion system has a catheter and a driver to inject retroperfusate into the coronary sinus. The catheter has a balloon which is inflated and deflated to first occlude and then drain the coronary sinus. During occlusion, retroperfusate is injected under pressure by the driver which also operates the balloon all in accordance with a preselected program.
