Composition and methods of making the compositions are provided. The composition may include an aqueous emulsion of a polymer resin and a hydrophobic monomer with the proviso that the composition is surfactant-free; wherein the support resin may be a styrene-acrylic resin or acrylic resin having from about 5 wt % to about 40 wt % acid functional repeat units.

The present invention provides aqueous dispersions of highly-branched polymers for coating applications and methods for making the polymers. The polymers may have high molecular weights and desirably take the form of microgels. The polymers and dispersions may be formulated with functionalities, viscosities, and solids contents that make them well-suited for use in a variety of coatings including, but not limited to, 2-pack coatings, ultraviolet (UV) curable coatings, inks, and air-dry coatings.

A solvent based composition containing a non-aqueous solvent and a substantially non-gelled polymeric composition is disclosed. The polymeric composition comprises the reaction product of an A polymer which is an addition polymer having 3.5 or more reactive functional groups per polymer chain and a B polymer having about 2 to about 3 functional groups per polymer chain that are co-reactive with the reactive functional groups of the A polymer. The solvent based composition includes coatings, adhesives, inks, primers, overprint varnishes and the like.

An aqueous polymeric dispersion is described containing at least one substantially non-gelled polymeric composition comprising the reaction product of an A polymer which is an addition polymer having 3.5 or more reactive functional groups per polymer chain and a B polymer having about 2 to about 3 functional groups per polymer chain that are co-reactive with the reactive functional groups of the A polymer and an aqueous solvent. The aqueous polymeric dispersion is particularly useful in or as overprint varnishes, inks, pigment dispersions, paints, adhesives, coatings, support resins, emulsion polymers and the like.
