A method for determining motional branch current in an ultrasonic transducer of an ultrasonic surgical device over multiple frequencies of a transducer drive signal. The method may comprise, at each of a plurality of frequencies of the transducer drive signal, oversampling a current and voltage of the transducer drive signal, receiving, by a processor, the current and voltage samples, and determining, by the processor, the motional branch current based on the current and voltage samples, a static capacitance of the ultrasonic transducer and the frequency of the transducer drive signal.

Surgical generator for ultrasonic and electrosurgical devices

Disclosed is a surgical system, comprising surgical hubs configured to be communicatively coupled to surgical instruments in surgical procedures; and a cloud computing system, comprising an input/output interface configured for accessing data from the surgical hubs. The cloud computing system is configured to aggregate surgical instrument data and patient outcome date from the surgical hubs; determine a correlation between the surgical instrument data and the patient outcome data; access a live surgical procedure data for a live surgical procedure; and determine an irregularity in the live surgical procedure data based on the correlation.

A modular surgical system for use in a surgical procedure is disclosed. The modular surgical system includes a control module including a power supply and surgical modules including a first surgical module and a second surgical module. The first surgical module is arranged in a stack configuration with the control module and the second surgical module. The power supply is configured to output power to the first surgical module and the second surgical module. A power backplane is configured to deliver the power to the first surgical module and the second surgical module through the first surgical module. A control circuit is configured to adaptively adjust power allocations to the first surgical module and the second surgical module.

Power and communication mitigation arrangement for modular surgical energy system

A method of operating a modular surgical system including a control module, a first surgical module, and a second surgical module is disclosed. A method of creating an anastomosis is provided using a stapling assembly including a body extending distally along a longitudinal axis and a deck member defining a deck surface. The deck surface includes a first array of staple openings comprising a herringbone pattern, and each staple opening of the first array of staple openings has a same size. The method includes positioning an anvil within a first lumen of a patient and positioning the stapling assembly within a second lumen of the patient. The method also includes releasably coupling the anvil with the stapling assembly and compressing tissue of the first and second lumens between the anvil and the deck member. The method further includes actuating a plurality of staple drivers to drive a first plurality of staples distally and parallel to the longitudinal axis from the first array of staple openings into the tissue to define the anastomosis.

An energy module connectable to a surgical instrument is disclosed. The energy module can include a circuit, which can include a first amplifier and a second amplifier coupled to a port of the energy module to which a surgical instrument is connectable. The first amplifier can be configured to generate a first drive signal at a first frequency range and the second amplifier can be configured to generate a second drive signal at a second frequency range. The circuit can be configured to control the amplifiers to deliver the first drive signal, the second drive signal, and/or a combination of the first and second drive signals to a surgical instrument connected to the port.

Mitigating a user interface display function of a modular energy system includes receiving formatted video data at a video data converter circuit, providing differential video signaling data to the display from the video data converter circuit, providing a copy of the differential video signaling data to a processor, and determining that the differential video signaling data is changing over time. Mitigating erroneous outputs from an isolated interface includes receiving a state of a first switch of a first footswitch coupled to a first comparator and a reference voltage coupled to the first comparator, receiving the state of the first switch coupled to the first duplicate comparator and the reference voltage coupled to the first duplicate comparator, comparing the output of the first comparator with the output of the first duplicate comparator, and determining activation or deactivation of a surgical instrument coupled to the controller based on the comparison.

Modular energy system for use in a surgical environment

A generator comprising an interface and a control circuit is disclosed. The interface is to electrically couple to an ultrasonic surgical instrument comprising a switch. The switch is configurable between a first switch state and a second switch state. The control circuit is to provide a continuous drive signal to the ultrasonic surgical instrument based on the switch being in the first switch state. The control circuit is to provide a pulsed drive signal to the ultrasonic surgical instrument based on the switch being in the second switch state.

Generator for use with an ultrasonic surgical instrument

A system configured to control operation of an ultrasonic surgical instrument is disclosed. The system comprises a generator configured to generate a signal, and a computer communicably coupled to the generator. The computer is configured to receive a first set of variables corresponding to a first signal at a first power level of the instrument, evaluate the first set of variables with a model to generate a first output, wherein the first output comprises a value between the first set of variables and a condition set, and wherein the condition set comprises a plurality of conditions that correspond to a plurality of responses, determine the first output meets a first threshold value for a first condition; determine a first response corresponding to the first condition, wherein the first response is a second power level for the instrument, and transmit the second power level to the generator for a second signal.

Switch arrangements for ultrasonic surgical instruments

An ultrasonic instrument includes a body, an actuation assembly, a shaft assembly, and an end effector. The actuation assembly includes an activation member that is operable to move in a first direction to select a mode of operation. The shaft assembly extends distally from the body and includes an acoustic waveguide. The end effector includes an ultrasonic blade that is in acoustic communication with the acoustic waveguide. The activation member is operable to move in a second direction to activate the end effector in a mode of operation selected by movement of the activation member in the first direction.

Surgical instrument with multi-function button

A modular surgical system for use in a surgical procedure is disclosed. The modular surgical system includes a header module, a first surgical module, a second surgical module, a first backplane connector configured to detachably connect the header module to the first surgical module, and a second backplane connector configured to detachably connect the first surgical module to the second surgical module. The first surgical module is arrangeable in a stack configuration with the header module and the second surgical module. The first backplane connector is configured to yield a first bit pattern identifying the first surgical module in the stack configuration. Disclosed is an isolated interface circuit for a modular energy system. A comparator is configured to couple to a switch and a reference voltage, and an output. A duplicate comparator is configured to couple to the switch and the reference voltage. An expander circuit is coupled to the comparator and the duplicate comparator. An isolator circuit is coupled to the expander circuit. A controller is coupled to the isolator circuit. The controller is configured to compare the output of the comparator with the output of the duplicate comparator and determine activation or deactivation of a surgical instrument coupled to the controller based on the comparison.

Energy delivery mitigations for modular energy systems

A method for evacuating particulates from a surgical site is disclosed. The method comprises communicatively connecting a particulate evacuation module and a surgical hub, wherein the surgical hub comprises a surgical hub enclosure, and wherein the particulate evacuation module is configured to be received within the surgical hub enclosure. The method further comprises removing a particulate from the surgical site and into the particulate evacuation module, analyzing the removed particulate, and modifying an operation of the particulate evacuation module based on the analysis of the removed particulate.

A method for controlling an output of an energy module of a modular energy system is disclosed. The modular energy system includes a header module, the energy module, and a secondary module communicably coupled together. The energy module configured to provide an output driving an energy modality deliverable by a surgical instrument connected thereto. The method includes causing the energy module to provide the output driving the energy modality delivered by the surgical instrument; sensing a parameter associated with the secondary module; receiving the parameter as sensed by the secondary module at the energy module; and adjusting the output of the energy module from a first state to a second state according to the received parameter.
