The presently disclosed claimed inventive concept(s) relates generally to a rheology modifier composition and an aqueous protective coating composition containing the rheology modifier composition. More particularly, the presently disclosed and/or claimed inventive concept(s) relates to a rheology modifier composition comprising (a) about 50 to about 99% by weight of a water soluble polymer and about 1 to about 50% by weight of a cationic polymer, wherein the cationic polymer is produced by polymerizing a quaternized monomer or by polymerizing a quaternized monomer and a non-quaternized monomer. Additionally, the presently disclosed and/or claimed inventive concept(s) relates generally to the methods of making the rheology modifier composition and the aqueous protective coating composition.

High efficiency rheology modifers with cationic components and use thereof

Paint formulations are neutralized with a non-VOC neutralizing agent. The neutralizing agent is a neutralized amino acid or intermediate, an amino phosphate, an amino phosphonate, amino sulfate, or amino sulfonate wherein the neutralizing agent has a pKaof at least 9. These neutralizing agents can be used to provide a paint formulation within a pH range of 8 to 10 and do not add any volatile organic compounds to the paint formulation.

A synthetic polymer has a water-soluble or water-swellable polyurethane backbone and terminal groups and/or intermediate groups of blocks of hydrophobes of alkyl- or aryl compounds containing a polymerizable cyclic monomer or a polymerizable double bond (or alkene) group or derivatives thereof. The blocks of hydrophobes are composed of two or more units of the same or different hydrophobes. These synthetic polymers are used as rheology modifiers, especially in latex paints.

Colorant compatible synthetic thickener for paint

An aqueous dispersion includes an associative thickener based on a hydrophobically modified poly(acetal- or ketal-polyether) (HM-PAPE) and at least one viscosity reducing agent selected from ethoxylated alcohols, ethoxylated acetyleneic diols, phosphate esters, dialkyl sulfosuccinates, and mixtures thereof. This aqueous dispersion improves the incorporation of the HM-PAPEs into aqueous based protective coatings. This dispersion also improves water-borne coating compositions that optionally contain latex.
