An interrupter device provides overload protection. The device includes a first terminal that is configured to establish an electrical connection to a first terminal of a high voltage surge arrester, a second terminal that is configured to establish an electrical connection to an electrical power grid line side conductor, and a chargeless disconnection trigger that causes an interruption in an electrically conductive path between the first and second terminal in response to an overload condition at the second terminal.

A dead front connector including a housing, an electrical coupling configured to electrically connect a power cable to a device, and an indicator located on the housing. The dead front connector further including a voltage testing circuit configured to test a voltage between the power cable and the device and illuminate the indicator when the voltage is above a predetermined threshold.

A composite surge arrester assembly and method of construction protects electrical devices from voltage spikes by limiting the voltage supplied to an electric device by shorting to ground any unwanted voltages above a safe threshold. The composite surge arrester assembly forms an arrester array from an alternating arrangement of deformable conductive contact plates, and metal oxide varistor (MOV) blocks. The contact plates bend and have various types of surfaces to create uniform contact with MOV blocks. The MOV blocks are dimensioned to minimize metal mass. An epoxy impregnated fiberglass reinforcement member wraps around the arrester array at an angle between 0&#xb0; to 90&#xb0;, and preferably 45&#xb0;, relative to the axial disposition of arrester array, while also purging air pockets therebetween. The reinforcement member dampens acoustic shock waves from high current impulses while maintaining electrical contact between MOV blocks. A polymer housing encapsulates the epoxy and fiberglass reinforced arrester array.

The voltage tap is configured to allow testing for the presence of a voltage between the power cable and the device. The voltage testing circuit is placed within the voltage tap. The voltage testing circuit includes an indicator configured to provide an indication when the voltage is present.

A line protection system described herein provides reliable electro-mechanical connections between system components, reduces mechanical stresses on a disconnector, assures more effective disconnection of a failed arrestor, and is lower in cost than existing systems. The line protection system includes a surge arrestor, a disconnector coupled to the surge arrestor, and a line lead coupled to the disconnector. The line lead generally is a high strength cable and/or the line protection system generally does not include a shunt bypass assembly. Upon exposure to a high voltage condition, the disconnector actuates and separates the line lead from the system.

An electrical assembly having an elongated electrical component, such as a surge arrester, coupled to a grading device for distributing an electric field along the electrical component as a continuous operating voltage is applied to the electrical component. The grading device includes a grading body that is coupled to the electrical component. The grading body includes semi-conductive materials. The semi-conductive materials can be nonmetallic. The grading device has improved flashover resistance over conventional metal grading devices.

A high voltage insulator has a fiberglass reinforced core surrounded by a polymer weathershed housing with a plurality of fins. Metal fittings are located at both ends of the insulator and are connected to the weathershed housing by shielding collars. A corona protection device of semiconductive elastomeric material is attached or bonded to the exterior of the shielding collar or the metal fitting. The interface between the corona protection device and the shielding collar or metal fitting may include a sealant or other compound.

An end fitting for an insulator includes a main cast body for securement to an external structure and a non-machined annular flange rigidly attached at an end of the main cast body and defining a hole for receiving an end of a fiberglass rod to secure the annular flange to the fiberglass rod in assembling the insulator. At least a portion of the annular flange is formed of a preformed annular member defining at least an interior diameter of the annular flange. The use of the preformed annular member eliminates the need for two costly secondary machining operations to prepare the annular flange for receiving and crimping on the fiberglass rod of the insulator.

An elastomeric surge arrester housing includes a sleeve having a tubular core and radiating sheds. The sleeve is molded in a first configuration and, when the core is radially stretched, assumes a second configuration in which the sheds assume a downwardly extending configuration. The sheds, in the second configuration, include an upper surface having a generally frustoconical shape. The housing may be made using conventional molding techniques, but requires substantially less material than if the housing were molded directly into the second configuration.
