Systems and methods for steering data packets among a plurality of available network devices. A device connected to a wide area network through multiple network interfaces may dynamically select which network interface to use to transmit individual packets sent to, and received from, client devices over a local area network.

Methods, systems, and devices for steering packets across multiple access technologies

A fiber optic node includes an electronics equipment enclosure. The electronics equipment enclosure includes a lid, a base, and at least one side wall defining an interior space of the electronics equipment enclosure. The fiber optic node further includes an optical receiver mounted within the interior space of the electronics equipment enclosure. The at least one side wall is coupled to the lid, the base, or both the lid and the base. The at least one side wall is formed of at least a semi-permeable fabric mesh. The semi-permeable fabric mesh includes a rigid mesh screen and a semi-permeable membrane coupled to the rigid mesh screen for convection of heat generated within the interior space by the optical receiver to outside the electronics equipment enclosure.

A bi-directional coupler assembly includes a first port for connecting to one of an input forward path RF signal line and an output forward path RF signal line. A second port connects to the other of the input forward path RF signal line and the output forward path RF signal line. A relay is connected between the ports and to at least one directional coupler. In a first state of the relay, an input forward path RF signal delivered from the input forward path RF signal line and through the first port is directed through the at least one directional coupler in a first direction. In a second state of the relay, an input forward path RF signal delivered from the input forward path RF signal line and through the second port is directed through the at least one directional coupler in said first direction.

Dynamic control and modification of coaxial tap directionality

Particular embodiments provide an N+0 sharing scheme for networks. The N+0 sharing scheme includes no dedicated spare among a group of active elements. Each active element may provide service to a medium, which may be associated with a medium. When a failure to one of the active elements occurs, at least one of the working active elements takes the workload of the failed active element. The cost of N+0 sharing is a reduced per medium (e.g., service group) capacity during a failure. That is, some service groups may receive less bandwidth from the active element that is used in the sharing scheme to compensate for the failure. However, this may be preferable to service operators compared to the additional cost of including a spare for the group of active elements, or the complete loss of service that occurs when a failure occurs without a failure recovery scheme.

N+0 redundancy in a network access system

Methods, systems, and apparatuses can provide improved bandwidth and reduction in processing resources in a cable system using bonded upstream channels. Physical or environmental changes can occur in the HFC network effecting communication performance on one or more upstream channels. For optimal HFC network performance periodic measurements and adjustments are made reducing HFC network bandwidth and consume processing resources. This periodic maintenance is performed even if the communication service is not using the additional upstream bandwidth provided through upstream channel bonding. Demand-based bonded upstream channel allocation and de-allocation provides additional upstream bandwidth when required while optimizing HFC network performance and reducing processing resources through the reduction of periodic measurements and adjustments on the HFC network.

Method and apparatus for demand-based cable upstream channel assignment

Particular embodiments identify customer premise equipment (CPE) in a subscriber's premises that may potentially cause interference with other devices. For example, the interference may occur within an interfering spectrum where an interfering CPE transmits upstream in a frequency band that is the downstream frequency band for other customer premise equipment, such as legacy CPEs. Once the CPE is identified, when the CPE sends a request to initialize the CPE on the network, a cable modem termination service (CMTS) may adjust the target power level for a transmitter transmitting upstream content within the interfering frequency spectrum. For example, for those CPEs that transmit upstream using upstream channels within an interfering spectrum, such as within 54-85 MHz, the power level for these CPE may be reduced. Other CPEs that are not transmitting upstream in this interfering spectrum may not have their power reduced.

Interference reduction for upstream signals in communication networks

With the introduction of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology in to communication channels in a cable network, cable modems that receive data downstream over subcarriers of the OFDM channel are grouped in to modulation tiers based on at least one metric. A profile is generated for each OFDM channel based on the measurements across cable modems and subcarriers related to the OFDM channel, including the metric values used to group the cable modems in to the modulation tiers. Included in an OFDM profile may be a scheme for allocating marginal cable modems in to the plurality of modulation tiers. The methods and systems for generating modulation and coding scheme profiles enable more efficient modulation by network elements.

Methods and apparatuses for adaptively multicasting information from a server to a multicast group are provided. A multicast transmission along one or more paths of the transmission is changed as network conditions warrant.

Adaptive multicasting

A device, such as a cable modem or embedded media terminal adaptor that attempts to obtain unauthorized network services, is designated by head end equipment, such as a CMTS, as being a 'rogue' device. Upon a range request from the rogue device, the CMTS responds with a continuing range command. Upon receiving each periodic range request transmitted from the rogue device during a periodic station maintenance opportunity, the CMTS responds with another continuing range command. Thus, the rogue device does not ever establish connection with the CMTS because an ACK message is not received back from the CMTS.

Method and system for denying cable modem access to a broadband network

Bandwidth is assigned to subscribers of a data network by applying logic of one or more network devices to sample bits of information communicated over a network communication medium to identify if there is a network congestion condition or an extremely lightly loaded condition. The maximum bandwidth assigned to a subscriber is below a normative maximum bandwidth assigned to the subscriber if the network is congested and the logic of the one or more network devices identifies the subscriber as a heavy bandwidth user. The maximum bandwidth assigned to a subscriber is above the normative maximum bandwidth if the network is extremely lightly loaded and the subscriber is a heavy bandwidth user.

Methods, systems, and apparatuses can provide for adaptive streaming using non-local information. Non-local information identifying usage statistics associated with a network service group can be collected and used to derive session parameters associated with each of a plurality of sessions within the network service group. The non-local information can also be updated and the updated non-local information can be used to dynamically adjust the session parameters.

Methods, systems, and apparatus used to determine whether to discard a network packet based upon the latency exhibited by an associated a network packet queue. Network devices can include a queue management module operable to identify a latency metric in network packet queues and determine whether the latency metric renders the network packet queue eligible for discarding packets based upon, for example, a latency policy.

Methods and apparatuses for streaming a video stored on a server to a display device over a network are provided. The TCP receive window size is adjusted to achieve a more uniform transmission of video segments of the video over the network to reduce the bustiness of network traffic.

A translation agent adapts DOCSIS information, primarily QoS information, for transmission over a PON. The agent places into an IP address field of a DHCP message the MAC address of an ONU associated with a CPE device attempting to register with a CMTS. The translation agent intercepts DHCP reply messages from the DHCP server using the MAC address of the ONU. The translation agent extracts information, including an IP address of the client CPE assigned by the DHCP server. The agent downloads a configuration file for the CPE device using the configuration filename and configuration file server contained in a DHCP reply message. Information contained in the configuration file is converted from content in a format used by DOCSIS, to content in a format used by PON devices. The translated content includes QoS parameters, functions related to which are controlled at the ONU by an OLT coupled to the CMTS.

A device, such as a cable modem or embedded media terminal adaptor that attempts to obtain unauthorized network services, is designated by head end equipment, such as a CMTS, as being a 'rogue' device. Upon an initial range request from the rogue device, the CMTS responds with a continuing range command. Upon receiving each periodic range request transmitted from the rogue device during a periodic station maintenance opportunity, the CMTS responds with another continuing range command. Thus, the rogue device does not ever establish connection with the CMTS because an ACK message is not received back from the CMTS. Moreover, use of CMTS resources for processing request from rogue devices is minimized because the rogue device does not reinitialize its MAC after a predetermined period of time, which it would do if a periodic ranging opportunity was not scheduled.
