The present invention relates to printed substrates for use in a variety of applications such as a label stock and flexible packaging structures. The substrates are printed with radiation curable printing ink, especially UV curable printing inks employed in UV inkjet printing processes. The substrates are coated with an ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer based coating capable of adhering and providing wet out properties with UV inkjet inks. Optionally, the coating contains an acrylic polymer. In a specific embodiment, the coating includes a major proportion of ethylene-acrylic acid and minor amounts of filler such as talc and silica. The coating can also include wax and/or pigment such as titanium dioxide. In a further embodiment, the carboxylate groups of the copolymer are neutralized with metal ions from Group Ia, IIa or IIb of the Periodic Table of the Elements, specifically, sodium.

UV inkjet printed substrates

A composite film useful for image supporting media, including: a first layer containing a thermoplastic polymer and optionally containing a whitening agent; a second layer containing a thermoplastic polymer and a whitening agent; a third layer containing a thermoplastic polymer and a cavitating agent, wherein the third layer is a cavitated layer; optionally a fourth layer containing a thermoplastic polymer and optionally a whitening agent; and optionally a fifth layer containing a thermoplastic polymer and optionally a whitening agent; wherein the second layer is between the first layer and the third layer, the third layer is between the second layer and the optional fourth layer, and the optional fourth layer is between the third layer and the optional fifth layer. Embodiments may have the advantage(s) of improved outer surface characteristics, compressibility, thermal insulation, whiteness, and/or stiffness.

Composite film

A method is provided for surface treating a porous sheet material. The surface treatment involves contacting at least one porous surface of the film with plasma at atmospheric pressure and a plasma generating electrode frequency of greater than 1 MHz. This method provides treatment which penetrates into the pores of the sheet material.

Porous plasma treated sheet material

Readily castable high density polyethylene (HDPE) films, preferably containing broad molecular weight distribution HDPE resin having treated upper skin layers and untreated lower skin layers, preferably coextruded, on each side, wherein a particulate cross-linked hydrocarbyl-substituted polysiloxane is present in the untreated lower skin layer to reduce coefficient of friction and enhance machinability. The treated upper skin layer is derived from a polymer, e.g., ethylene-propylene-butene-1 terpolymer, and the lower skin layer is derived from a polymer such as ethylene-propylene-butene-1 terpolymer and LDPE compounded with silicone oil.

Oriented HDPE films with skin layers

Readily castable high density polyethylene (HDPE) films, preferably containing broad molecular weight distribution HDPE resin having treated upper skin layers and untreated lower skin layers, preferably coextruded, on each side. The treated upper skin layer is derived from a polymer, e.g., ethylene-propylene-butene-1 terpolymer, and the lower skin layer is derived from a polymer such as ethylene-propylene-butene-1 terpolymer and LDPE compounded with silicone oil. Such skin layers provide a film which is readily castable while maintaining the desirable properties of HDPE including dead fold, twist retention, TD tear and moisture barrier. The films are cast, and oriented in the solid state up to about two times in the machine direction and six times or more in the transverse direction to give films having good dead-fold characteristics making them highly suited for packaging, particularly for dry foods.

A base thermoplastic film, has a coextruded or coated heat seal layer formed from a polymer blend which provides good peel-apart heat seals. When the film is sealed to itself, the seal opens by separation at the original seal surface without film tear, or by delamination of the sealant material from the primary base film substrate without the formation of strands extending between the two base film. The heat seal layer which may be on one or both sides of the base layer comprises a ternary blend of a random ethylene-propylene copolymer, a butene polymer and a low density polyethylene. The films are cast, and oriented in the solid state up to about two times in the machine direction and six times or more in the transverse direction to give films having good dead-fold and water vapor transmission rate characteristics making them highly suited for packaging, particularly for dry foods.

Heat sealable base films

A resin combination comprising a thermoplastic polymer matrix having dispersed therein as distinct phases, a multiplicity of small spherical solid particles of polybutylene terephthalate, the resin combination in opaque biaxially oriented polymeric film form and the same oriented film structure having on at least one surface thereof a void-free thermoplastic skin layer. The process for preparing a biaxially oriented opaque film comprising providing said resin combination, forming an unoriented film of said resin combination and biaxially orienting said film to an extent sufficient to opacify the same. The process also provides for the opaque film having a void-free thermoplastic skin layer on at least one surface thereof.
