In various implementations, a calculation manger identifies one or more external references within a workbook, wherein the workbook resides in a spreadsheet environment comprising multiple workbooks. The recalculation manager then identifies a scope of a recalculation, triggered by an event in the workbook, based on one or more factors comprising the one or more external references. A recalculation engine then performs the recalculation within the identified scope.

Dynamically limiting the scope of spreadsheet recalculations

A method may include receiving an indication that a recalculation operation is to be completed for data stored in a data file; determining that a currently assigned number of threads for execution of the recalculation operation is lower than a target number of threads for the recalculation operation; requesting an additional thread for execution of the recalculation operation; beginning execution of the recalculation operation using the currently assigned number of threads; receiving an indication that the additional thread is available for execution of the recalculation operation; updating the currently assigned number of threads to include the additional thread; and continuing execution of the recalculation operation using the updated currently assigned number of threads.

System for adaptive multithreaded recalculation operations

Systems and methods are directed to providing efficient and fast invocation of concurrent sheet defined functions (SDFs) including dynamic arrays by front-loading the work. At SDF creation time, a SDF cell table, a formula table, and a spill area table are generated. The SDF cell table represents cells from a worksheet that are used for the SDF. The formula table comprises an index of formulas used by the SDF, whereby index identifiers are stored in cells of the SDF cell table. The spill area table comprises an index of spill areas where each dynamic array may automatically spill into. The SDF cell table, formula table, and spill area table are shared between a plurality of invocations of the SDF during invocation time.

Efficient concurrent invocation of sheet defined functions including dynamic arrays

In non-limiting examples of the present disclosure, systems, methods and devices for identifying a target value in a data set are presented. A request for a first target value in a data array may be received, wherein the request comprises first reference value. The data array may comprise a plurality of values and a plurality of value types included in one or more tables in a computer-implemented spreadsheet application. An index comprising a plurality of sorted reference numbers corresponding to a plurality of values in the data array may be generated based on the request. The index may be searched, and based at least on the search, the first reference value may be identified. In additional examples, the index may be cached and utilized to process additional target value requests that reference an overlapping range value with the first request.

Data set lookup with binary search integration and caching

Examples discussed herein relate to creating and handling lambdas in spreadsheet application, e.g., Microsoft Excel&#xae;. As discussed herein, lambdas are user defined functions (UDFs) that are natively creatable and maintainable through the use of a lambda registry in the spreadsheet application. In an implementation, a method of handling lambdas in a spreadsheet application is disclosed. The method includes detecting that a cell of a spreadsheet is populated with an expression that defines a lambda function and registering the lambda function with a lambda registry corresponding to the spreadsheet. The registration includes recording a home cell that identifies a location of the cell of the spreadsheet where the lambda function is defined. The method further includes replacing the expression that defines the lambda function with a reference to the registered lambda function.

Creating and handling lambda functions in spreadsheet applications

A framework for enabling users to create User Defined Functions (UDFs), which can run simultaneously without using multiple calculation threads, is provided. A calculation engine continues a remainder of calculation operations independent of a pending asynchronous function upon starting to run the asynchronous function without waiting to receive a result. The result value is introduced to the computation at a later time during the calculation cycle, when it is received or completed by the calculation engine. When the results are received, downstream operations such as dependent functions are calculated without changing a flow of dependencies within the operations.

Asynchronous user defined functions

This disclosure relates to a method and system of processing chain calculations in spreadsheet applications utilizing multiple processors, each having a separate recalculation engine. A single calculation chain may be reordered into a unified chain where supporting and dependent formulas are organized into a tree hierarchy of child chains. The unified chain is further divided into dependency levels, where entries in each dependency level may be moved to a next dependency level during reordering. If an entry within a dependency level is dependent upon another entry not found within its own child chain, the unified chain is ordered such that an entry is only dependent upon an entry in a prior dependency level. Further, dependency levels allow a control thread to perform control-thread-only operations while maintaining multi-thread processing capabilities.

Embodiments of the invention involve a method of concurrent processing of chain calculations using multiple processors each having a separate recalculation engine in a spreadsheet program. The operations basically include first determining a number of available processors, then allocating a recalculation engine to each available processor, distributing the formulas between the recalculation engines, and then concurrently evaluating the formulas distributed to each recalculation engine when a recalc operation is called for in the spreadsheet program.
