The present invention discloses cellulosic composites that include mechanical or chemical pulp, and methods for producing such cellulosic composites. Embodiments of such composites may exhibit improved mechanical properties and moisture resistance when compared to composites derived from conventional cellulosic feedstock.

Compositions and methods for reducing the surface temperature of composite articles

A non-metallic tie, for example a twist-tie or a tin-tie, comprises a polymeric material melt-blending from a composition containing (a) from about 50 to about 80 wt % of at least one matrix-forming thermoplastic polymer which is amorphous or becomes amorphous when melted, and (b) from about 20 to about 50 wt % of at least one elastomeric polymer which has a flexural modulus of less than 700 MPa and a glass transition temperature less than 25&#xb0; C., based on the combined weight of (a) and (b). The tie is characterized by tensile elongation at break according to ASTM D638-00 of from about 20&#xb0; to about 100&#xb0;; and a dead fold angle equal to or less than about 30&#xb0;, as determined by a method including the steps of (i) providing a sample of the twist tie having two end portions, a thickness of 1-2 mm and a length of about 100 mm; (ii) folding the sample approximately in half in the lengthwise direction so that end portions are approximately adjacent to each other; (iii) relaxing the folded sample at room temperature for three minutes; and (iv) measuring as the dead fold angle the included angle between the article sample end portions.

Highly filled polymeric concentrates

A method of forming a substrate in a thermal compression bonding process that permit substantially greater amounts of fillers than previously accomplished. The method employs a dispersion of a thermoplastic binder and a filler. The dispersion is then thermally compression bonded to form a substrate. Lightweight fillers are one example of fillers that are ideally suited for the thermal compression bonding through the use of a dispersion. Such lightweight fillers enable the formation of a substrate with a very low and desirable specific gravity.

The present invention describes compostable or biobased foams that are useful for fabricating foamed articles and methods for producing the same. The foams are produced using a compound comprising a compostable or biobased polyester and a blowing agent. Additives including plasticizers and chain extenders are optionally included in the compostable or biobased composition. These foams can be produced using conventional melt processing techniques, such as single and twin-screw extrusion processes. In one embodiment, foamed strand profiles are cooled and cut using conventional strand pelletizing equipment. In another embodiment, foamed beads are produced by cutting the foamed strand at the face of the extrusion die and the foamed bead or strand is subsequently cooled. The resulting compostable or biobased foamed bead has a specific gravity less than 0.15 g/cmand the foam is compostable, as determined by ASTM D6400.

Compostable or biobased foams

A substrate and method for providing a thermoplastic composite having a fiberglass mat embedded within a thermoplastic polymer. The characteristics of the fiberglass mat combined with a thermal compression bonding method allow for a substantially improved and desirable thermal expansion coefficient over conventionally filled thermoplastic substrates or other fiberglass reinforced thermoplastics.

A method of treating a biobased feedstock derived from agricultural resources and specifically from the non-distillate products of fermentation-derived renewable fuel and distilled spirit processes. The separation of thermally labile components from biobased feedstocks result in materials that are thermally stable and better suited for subsequent melt processing in a polymer matrix.
