A composition including an ethylene blocking agent complex formed from the product of an ethylene blocking agent and a host, and at least one water-soluble polymer, wherein the ethylene blocking agent complex and the at least one water-soluble polymer are intermingled is disclosed.

Delivery of ethylene blocking and/or promoting agents

The invention relates to a polyolefin-based heat sealable and peelable seal. The peelable seals comprise from 5 to 98 percent by weight of a propylene based plastomer or elastomer and from 2 to 95 percent by weight of a second polymer selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polybutylene, and styrenic polymer and mixtures thereof. The invention also relates to tamper evident peelable seals. The invention also relates to methods of making and using the heat sealable, peelable seal.

Polyolefin based peelable seals

Film layers made from formulated ethylene polymer compositions are disclosed. Film layers made from such formulated compositions have surprisingly good heat seal properties, and an especially good reduction in heat seal initiation temperature. The ethylene polymer compositions have at least one homogeneously branched ethylene/alpha-olefin interpolymer and at least one homogeneously or heterogeneously branched ethylene polymer which has a lower melt index than the first mentioned component. The first homogeneously branched ethylene/alpha-olefin interpolymer has a melt index higher than that of the formulated composition.

Film layers made from ethylene polymer blends

A polymer produced by a transition metal containing catalyst useful for the polymerization of &agr;-olefins is prepared by (A) forming in an inert atmosphere which excludes oxygen and moisture a slurry of (1) a porous inorganic oxide support material selected from the group consisting of silica, alumina, or a combination of silica and alumina, said support material containing not greater than about 5 millimoles of hydroxyl groups per gram of support material and a particle size not greater than about 10 microns and a surface area of from about 50 to about 800 m /g in an inert organic liquid medium; (B) mixing said slurry with (2) an alkoxide and stirring the resultant mixture at a temperature of from about &minus;20&deg; C. to about 120&deg; C. for a time sufficient to saturate the surface of the support material; (C) mixing the product form (B) with (3) a titanium compound or a combination of a titanium compound and (4) a vanadium compound and stirring the resultant mixture at a temperature of from about &minus;20&deg; C. to about 120&deg; C. for a time sufficient to allow complete reaction of the titanium compound and the vanadium compound with the organomagnesium moieties remaining on the solid support; (D) mixing the product from (C) with an inert organic solution of (5) a Group IIIA metal alkyl halide at a temperature of from about &minus;20&deg; C. to about 120&deg; C. for a time sufficient to complete the reduction of the titanium and vanadium, if present, compounds to their final oxidation state. Ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymers which have greater than 17 percent high density fraction and a M /M ratio of less than about 3.6 are shown to be useful in making cast films which have good stretchability and good puncture resistance. Copolymers of the present invention having the specified properties are especially useful in making the films.

Silica supported transition metal catalyst

A polymer produced by a transition metal containing catalyst useful for the polymerization of &agr;-olefins is prepared by (A) forming in an inert atmosphere which excludes oxygen and moisture a slurry of (1) a porous inorganic oxide support material selected from the group consisting of silica, alumina, or a combination of silica and alumina, said support material containing not greater than about 5 millimoles of hydroxyl groups per gram of support material and a particle size not greater than about 10 microns and a surface area of from about 50 to about 800 m,/g in an inert organic liquid medium; (B) mixing said slurry with (2) an alkoxide and stirring the resultant mixture at a temperature of from about &minus;20&deg; C. to about 120&deg; C. for a time sufficient to saturate the surface of the support material; (C) mixing the product form (B) with (3) a titanium compound or a combination of a titanium compound and (4) a vanadium compound and stirring the resultant mixture at a temperature of from about &minus;20&deg; C. to about 120&deg; C. for a time sufficient to allow complete reaction of the titanium compound and the vanadium compound with the organomagnesium moieties remaining on the solid support; (D) mixing the product from (C) with an inert organic solution of (5) a Group IIIA metal alkyl halide at a temperature of from about &minus;20&deg; C. to about 120&deg; C. for a time sufficient to complete the reduction of the titanium and vanadium, if present, compounds to their final oxidation state. Copolymers of the present invention having the specified properties are especially useful in making the films.

The subject invention pertains to a film structure suitable for the packaging of perishable food, comprising at least one film layer which in turn comprises a blend of at least one homogeneous linear or substantially linear ethylene polymer and at least one polypropylene polymer, wherein the film structure is characterized as having a 2% secant modulus which is at least 8% greater than a comparable film structure prepared without the polypropylene polymer, an oxygen transmission rate of at least 700 cc(at STP)-mil/100 in..sup.2 -day-atm at 25.degree. C. The inventive film structures exhibit an optimized balance of properties, making them especially useful in modified atmosphere packages for perishable goods. The inventive films are particularly suited for the packaging of fresh fruits, vegetables, and other perishable items which would benefit from controlled access to environmental oxygen.

Modified atmosphere films useful in the packaging of perishable food

Medium modulus molded polyethylene materials with improved impact strength are made. The polyethylene material is molded to pipes, bars, and sheets. The molded material comprises high molecular weight linear polyethylene and a substantially linear ethylene/.alpha.-olefin interpolymer. The material is more than about 0.23 mm thick, has a density in the range of about 0.923 to about 0.95 grams/cubic centimeter (g/cc) and has an excellent impact resistance.

C. to about 120.degree. C. for a time sufficient to saturate the surface of the support material; (C) mixing the product form (B) with (3) a titanium compound or a combination of a titanium compound and (4) a vanadium compound and stirring the resultant mixture at a temperature of from about -20.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C. for a time sufficient to allow complete reaction of the titanium compound and the vanadium compound with the organomagnesium moieties remaining on the solid support; (D) mixing the product from (C) with an inert organic solution of (5) a Group IIIA metal alkyl halide at a temperature of from about -20.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C. for a time sufficient to complete the reduction of the titanium and vanadium, if present, compounds to their final oxidation state.
