A surgical instrument made from flexibly resilient sheet metal has a handle formed into a sheet metal beam having a convex shape for improved strength. Raised uninterrupted arcuate protrusions on the outer surface of the handle of the instrument are provided to add additional strength and to provide improved grip retention when the surgical instrument is being used during surgical procedures. The improved handle is shown integrally as part of a needle holder capable of clamping surgical needles of varying diameters.

A ring handled surgical instrument is disclosed which can act as a scissors, a blunt dissector and a gripper. The device is made from flexibly resilient, medical grade sheet material in which the handles are strong enough to withstand without flexion the closure forces imparted by the fingers of a clinician and yet allow the blades on the operative end of the scissors to remain flexibly springy.

In endodontic therapy, a probe tool is disclosed which enables the removal of a broken file or instrument fragment wedged in a root canal of a tooth. A shank portion of the probe tool is made at least in part from flexible planar sheet material such as stainless spring steel. In a preferred method of use, a dental handpiece transfers oscillations or other cyclical rapid motions through the inventive probe tool to the root canal wall at the juncture with the embedded fragment. A portion of the shank end of the probe tool may be coated with abrasive material. The rapid motions or oscillations imparted to the flexible probe abrade the area where the fragment is wedged and yet minimize collateral damage to adjacent dentinal surfaces. Other types of dental handpieces can be used to transfer vibrational, reciprocating, hammering or circulatory motion to the probe tool when necessary to enhance the effectiveness of the abrading process. Another embodiment of the probe tool comprises a hook type barb to catch the loosened instrument fragment facilitating its removal from a root canal.

A surgical scissors or forceps for use where the operative field is greatly reduced and the instrument is elongated with a low profile and having convexity of the shanks in order to measurably increase the beam strength of the device. The instrument is further provided with interchangeable handle inserts that provide additional weight at the back end of the instrument.

A screw for use in spinal and other surgical procedures has a tapered core and fixed pitch threads. The threads have a compound curved inferior surface and constant width crest. The screw may be provided with a helical thread in which at least the lead thread adjacent to the screw tip is ledged and the following threads have sharp apices. A method of making the screw requires two tool bits making two different angular cuts to the inferior surface of the threads.

The fine screw tip and thread at the tip of the screw can be inserted into a bone with minimal tearing or cracking of the bone. The thicker core just below the screw head increases the screw's ability to withstand compressive and distractive loads. The core is thickest just below the head because it is at that point on the screw that the fulcrum loads are greatest.

A fluid container with a removably attached dosage dispenser receptacle in which the container is provided with a pump for pumping up fluid to the receptacle in predetermined dosages. An opening in the receptacle is aligned with the pump outlet conduit so that fluid can be pumped directly through the outlet conduit to the receptacle in predetermined amounts, and the dispenser can be detached from the container for use when required.

The vibratory device includes a power source and a replaceable heart cradle support member having a soft and pliable heart engaging element.

An improved surgical suture remover is formed of a single elongated strip of resiliently flexible material having a bend substantially midway in its elongation to define first and second shanks respectively carrying a blade and a shearing portion at their corresponding ends. The blade includes a cutting section, and the shearing portion includes a cutting edge, and the blade and shearing portion are pivotally connected for movement of the cutting section and cutting edge toward and away from each other along a cutting plane to cooperatively sever a suture therebetween. An elongated suture gripping element unitarily depending from the shearing portion includes a contact area for suture gripping contact with the cutting section during an operating stroke or jaw closure of the instrument. In another embodiment there is a cutting blade and a shear blade forming a scissors, with each blade having an elongated raised rib, and an abutment shoulder. The ribs render the blade tips inflexible and bow the blades relative to each other, in order to provide edge-to-edge contact between the blades.

A method of cutting a suture at least partly disposed in tissue and bearing a knot formed in the suture, wherein the suture is introduced into the slot of a suture cutter having a slotted member of a predetermined depth and a cutting blade relatively moveable with respect to the slotted member, the cutter is moved along the suture until the member contacts the knot, and the cutting blade is relatively moved across the slot to shearingly contact the suture such that a stub substantially equal in length to the depth of the slotted member remains on the suture adjacent the knot.
