An eye-mountable device is provided that includes a plurality of rigid polymer layers separated by liquid crystal layers. Certain eye-mountable devices includes a first rigid polymer layer, a second rigid polymer layer, and a liquid crystal layer between the first and second rigid polymer layers. The liquid crystal layer has a refractive index that is electrically controllable between an ordinary refractive index and an extraordinary refractive index, and the first rigid polymer layer and second rigid polymer layer include materials having a refractive index similar to the ordinary refractive index of the liquid crystal layer. The first rigid polymer layer and second rigid polymer layer may also include a combination of monomer-derived units that provide cast-moldable materials with high oxygen permeability. Methods for fabricating the eye-mountable device and for changing the focal length of the eye-mountable device are also provided.

An eye-mountable device (EMD) includes a lens enclosure, liquid crystal material, first and second electrodes, a substrate, and a controller. The lens enclosure includes a first encapsulation layer and a second encapsulation layer sealed to the first encapsulation layer. The liquid crystal material is disposed across a central region of the lens enclosure. The first electrode is disposed within the lens enclosure between the first encapsulation layer and the liquid crystal material. The second electrode is disposed within the lens enclosure between the second encapsulation layer and the liquid crystal material. The substrate is disposed within the EMD. The controller is disposed on the substrate and electrically coupled to the first and second electrodes to apply a voltage across the liquid crystal material.

Eye-mountable device to provide automatic accommodation and method of making same

An eye-mountable device includes layer(s) of polymer material defining a body. The body includes a first side and a second side extending from a first end to a second end. The first side opposes the second side and curves inwardly toward the second side. The second side curves outwardly away from the first side. The body includes an anterior surface and a posterior surface extending from the first side to the second side and from the first end to the second end. The anterior side opposes the posterior side. The posterior surface has a concave shape. The device includes a substrate in the body including a mounting platform disposed proximally to a middle of the second side. The device includes, on the mounting platform, electronics that interact with a biological environment and monitor health-related information. The body may have a thickness profile that prevents the device from undesired movement.

Eye-mountable underlid device for measuring an analyte

An eye-mountable composition, an eye-mountable device and a method for making the eye-mountable device are disclosed. In one aspect, an eye-mountable composition is disclosed, which may include a silicone hydrogel having silicon-containing monomer-derived units and hydrophilic monomer-derived units, a non-silicone hydrogel having non-silicon-containing hydrophobic monomer-derived units and hydrophilic monomer-derived units, or an elastomer. The composition is biocompatible, does not adhere to ocular tissue, and has a modulus of elasticity of 0.2 MPa to 10 MPa. Also provided is an eye mountable device including an electronics platform embedded in an eye-mountable composition, and a method for fabricating the eye-mountable device.

Biocompatible materials for underlid device fabrication

A protective layer for use on a sensor during a manufacturing process avoids damage to the sensor and keeps the sensor surface clean during lens fabrication. The protective layer includes a non-cross-linked, water-soluble polymer layer and an anhydrous, cross-linkable, methacrylate-based formulation layer, temporarily applied to a surface of the sensor. The protective layer may be used to protect the sensor during a manufacturing process by applying the non-cross-linked, water-soluble polymer layer and the anhydrous, cross-linkable, methacrylate-based formulation layer consecutively onto the surface of the sensor to form the protective layer; affixing the sensor to a substrate; fabricating a device that includes the substrate; and subsequently removing the protective layer from the surface of the sensor.

Embodiments are disclosed of an eye-mountable device (EMD) including a lens enclosure including an anterior layer and a posterior layer sealed to the anterior layer. An anterior electrode is disposed within the lens enclosure on a concave side of the anterior layer, a posterior electrode is disposed within the lens enclosure on a convex side of the posterior layer, and an electrochromic element is disposed across a central region of the lens enclosure, wherein the electrochromic element separates the anterior electrode from the posterior electrode within the central region.

An eye-mountable device includes a lens enclosure, an anterior conductive electrode, a posterior conductive electrode, and an accommodation actuator element. The lens enclosure includes an anterior layer and a posterior layer. The anterior conductive electrode is disposed within the lens enclosure and across a center region of the lens enclosure. The posterior conductive electrode is disposed within the lens enclosure and across the center region. The accommodation actuator element is disposed within the lens enclosure between the anterior and posterior conductive electrodes in the center region. The anterior and posterior conductive electrodes are transparent and electrically manipulate the accommodation actuator element.

Methods and apparatus for positioning a structure on a polymer layer are described. A method may involve forming a first polymer layer. The method may further involve positioning, by an apparatus, a structure on the first polymer layer, where the apparatus comprises a rod having a first end that supports the structure as the structure is being positioned and a plunger located around the first end of the rod that presses the structure onto the first polymer layer as the structure is being positioned. And the method may involve forming a second polymer layer over the first polymer layer and the structure, where the first polymer layer defines a first side of a body-mountable device and the second polymer layer defines a second side of the body-mountable device opposite the first side.

Methods and apparatus for positioning a structure on a polymer layer

An eye-mountable device, having an anterior convex side and a posterior concave side, is packaged in a container having a base and a wall. The wall extends from the base and defines an opening of the container. Disposed within the container is a pedestal, which has a first end attached to the base of the container and a second end opposite the first end. The eye-mountable device is mounted on the pedestal such that the posterior concave side contacts the second end of the pedestal and the eye-mountable device is elevated from the base of the container. The opening of the container can be sealed by a lidstock.

Packaging for an active contact lens

An eye-mountable device (EMD) includes a lens enclosure, liquid crystal material, first and second electrodes, a substrate, and a controller. The lens enclosure includes a first encapsulation layer and a second encapsulation layer sealed to the first encapsulation layer. The liquid crystal material is disposed across a central region of the lens enclosure. The first electrode is disposed within the lens enclosure between the first encapsulation layer and the liquid crystal material. The second electrode is disposed within the lens enclosure between the second encapsulation layer and the liquid crystal material. The substrate is disposed within the lens enclosure between the first and second encapsulation layers. The controller is disposed on the substrate and electrically coupled to the first and second electrodes to apply a voltage across the liquid crystal material.

The present disclosure provides a method including forming a polymer layer defining a side of an eye-mountable device. The method may also include providing an adhesive in a ring-shaped pattern on a ring-shaped substrate or on the first polymer layer. The method may also include providing the ring-shaped substrate on the first polymer layer in a predetermined rotational orientation. The method may also include applying a force to one or more of the ring-shaped substrate and the polymer layer to adhere the first polymer layer to the ring-shaped substrate. The method may also include curing the ring-shaped substrate and the first polymer layer.

Methods for adhering a substrate to a polymer layer

An eye-mountable device includes a flexible lens enclosure, anterior and posterior flexible conductive electrodes, and an accommodation actuator element. The flexible lens enclosure includes anterior and posterior layers that are sealed together. The anterior flexible conductive electrode is disposed within the flexible enclosure and across a center region of the flexible lens enclosure on a concave side of the anterior layer. The posterior flexible conductive electrode is disposed within the flexible enclosure and across the center region on a convex side of the posterior layer. The accommodation actuator element is disposed between the first and second flexible conductive electrodes. The anterior and posterior flexible conductive electrodes are transparent and electrically manipulate the accommodation actuator element.

An analyte sensor for the continuous or semi-continuous monitoring of physiological parameters and a method for making the analyte sensor are disclosed. In one aspect, the analyte sensor includes a crosslinked, hydrophilic copolymer in contact with a surface of an electrode, and an analyte sensing component embedded within the crosslinked, hydrophilic copolymer. The crosslinked, hydrophilic copolymer has methacrylate-derived backbone chains of first methacrylate-derived units, second methacrylate-derived units and third methacrylate-derived units. The first and second methacrylate-derived units have side chains that can be the same or different, and the third methacrylate-derived units in different backbone chains are connected by hydrophilic crosslinks.

A body-mountable device may include a first polymer layer, a second polymer layer, and a structure that includes a sensor between the first and second polymer layers. Fabricating the body-mountable device may involve providing a respective surface layer on each of one or more molding pieces, forming a first polymer layer, positioning the structure on the first polymer layer and then forming, between molding pieces, the second polymer layer over the structure positioned on the first polymer layer. The surface layer of each molding piece may facilitate release of the polymer layer or fabricated body-mountable device without disruption to the embedded structure.
