A pigment grind composition contains pigment, water dispersible acrylic polymer and a reactive diluent. The reactive diluent has a number average molecular weight of between about 200 and about 2500 and is selected from polyalkylene glycols, polyalkylene glycol ethers, glycol ether formals or mixtures of these. The pigment grind composition has a volatile organic content of less than two pounds per gallon.

Low volatile organic content pigment grind composition

A method of electrocoating an electroconductive substrate utilizes an aqueous electrocoating composition containing an electrodepositable water dispersible film forming polymer and a pigment grind composition. The pigment grind composition contains pigment, electrodepositable water dispersible acrylic polymer and a reactive diluent. The reactive diluent has a number average molecular weight of between about 200 and about 2500 and is selected from polyalkylene glycols, polyalkylene glycol ethers, glycol ether formals or mixtures of these. The pigment grind composition has a volatile organic content of less than two pounds per gallon. The method is particularly suitable for anodic electrodeposition.

Method of electrodeposition using an electrocoating composition

In a method for electrocoating an electrically conductive surface serving as an electrode, which method comprises passing an electrical current between the electrically conductive surface to be electrocoated and a counter electrode in contact with an electrodeposition bath comprising a synthetic resin ionically dispersed in an aqueous medium, wherein improvement comprises (a) adding a complexing agent, and then (b) removing at least a portion of the complexing agent along with metals coordinated therewith from the bath.

Method for treatment of electrodeposition bath

There is herein provided an aqueous dispersion of a resinous composition which is water-solubilized with a metal compound such as a metal salt, an example of which is zinc acetate.

Water-dispersible polymers containing metal chelating groups

A quaternary ammonium group-containing material which is obtained from reacting a polyepoxide with an amine containing at least one acyclic group of about 8 to 30 carbon atoms and optionally an amine containing an alkylarylpoly ether moiety is disclosed. The resins are useful as pigment grinding vehicles and in the formulation of pigment paste, particularly pigment paste with high pigment loadings. When formulated into cationic electrodepositable compositions, the pigment grinding vehicles provide for cured electrodeposited coatings of excellent corrosion resistance, particularly over untreated and oily steel.

A quaternary ammonium group-containing material and its method of preparation are disclosed. The quaternary ammonium group contains at least one organic group which contains an acyclic group of at least 8 carbon atoms and also contains a group of the structure ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl. The quaternary ammonium group-containing materials are useful as pigment grinding vehicles and in the formulation of pigment paste, particularly pigment paste with high pigment loadings. When formulated in cationic electrodepositable compositions, the pigment grinding vehicles provide for cured electrodeposited coatings of excellent corrosion resistance, particularly over untreated and oily steel.
