A content delivery network (CDN) includes a plurality of CDN components including at least one CDN rendezvous mechanism and at least one control core. The CDN components are controlled by control core data from the at least one control core. Some CDN components obtain CDN resources including control core data from at least some other CDN components. The CDN components use the CDN rendezvous mechanism to select one or more CDN components from which to obtain CDN resources.

Control in a content delivery network

A pair of eyeglasses may include one or more adjustable lenses that are each configured to align with a respective one of a user's eyes. The adjustable lenses may each include electrically modulated optical material such as one or more liquid crystal cells. The liquid crystal cells may include arrays of electrodes that extend along one, two, three, four, or more than four directions. Control circuitry may apply control signals to the array of electrodes in each liquid crystal cell to produce a desired phase profile. Each lens may be foveated such that portions of the lens within the user's gaze exhibit a different phase profile than portions of the lens outside of the user's gaze. The control circuitry may adjust the location of the optically distinct area so that it remains aligned with the user's gaze.

Tunable and foveated lens systems

Eyeglasses may include one or more lenses and control circuitry that adjusts an optical power of the lenses. The control circuitry may be configured to determine a user's prescription and accommodation range during a vision characterization process. The vision characterization process may include adjusting the optical power of the lens until the user indicates that an object viewed through the lens is in focus. A distance sensor may measure the distance to the in-focus object. The control circuitry may calculate the user's prescription based on the optical power of the lens and the distance to the in-focus object. The control circuitry may adjust the optical power automatically or in response to user input. The object viewed through the lens may be an electronic device. The user may control the optical power of the lens and/or indicate when objects are in focus by providing input to the electronic device.

Adjustable lens systems

Integrated laser sources emitting multi-wavelengths of light with reduced thermal transients and crosstalk and methods for operating thereof are disclosed. The integrated laser sources can include one or more heaters and a temperature control system to maintain a total thermal load of the gain segment, the heater(s), or both of a given laser to be within a range based on a predetermined target value. The system can include electrical circuitry configured to distribute current to the gain segment, the heater(s), or both. The heater(s) can be located proximate to the gain segment, and the distribution of current can be based on the relative locations. In some examples, the central laser can be heated prior to being activated. In some examples, one or more of the plurality of lasers can operate in a subthreshold operation mode when the laser is not lasing to minimize thermal perturbations to proximate lasers.

Integrated laser source

A load-balancing cluster includes a switch having a plurality of ports; and a plurality of servers connected to at least some of the plurality of ports of the switch. Each server is addressable by the same virtual Internet Protocol (VIP) address. Each server in the cluster has a mechanism constructed and adapted to respond to connection requests at the VIP by selecting one of the plurality of servers to handle that connection, wherein the selecting is based, at least in part, on a given function of information used to request the connection; and a firewall mechanism constructed and adapted to accept all requests for the VIP address for a particular connection only on the server that has been selected to handle that particular connection. The selected server determines whether it is responsible for the request and may hand it off to another cluster member.

Load-balancing cluster

A computer-implemented method obtains a plurality of image files, each corresponding to an image in a video stream and builds a common file from a contiguous grouping of the plurality of image files. The video stream has a plurality of contiguous video segments, each having a first video frame, and the plurality of image files correspond to the plurality of first video frames of the plurality of video segments. The plurality of video segments are of approximately equal duration.

Media resource storage and management

A pair of eyeglasses may include one or more adjustable lenses that are each configured to align with a respective one of a user's eyes. The adjustable lenses may include a foveated liquid crystal adjustable lens stacked with a non-liquid-crystal adjustable lens such as a fluid-filled lens or an Alvarez lens. The foveated adjustable lens may include electrically modulated optical material such as one or more liquid crystal cells. A network includes a first tier of servers, a second tier of servers and a third tier of servers. The first tier of servers comprises a plurality of primary servers capable of responding to requests. The plurality of primary servers includes at least one dynamic server having a load share characteristic that is dynamically altered during a first period in time and at least one static server having a constant load share characteristic during the first period in time. The second tier of servers includes at least two first layer overflow servers. Each of the first layer overflow servers is configured to provide response duties in the event that one or more of the primary servers is unavailable or overloaded. The third tier of servers comprising at least two second layer overflow servers. Each of the second layer overflow servers is configured to provide response duties in the event that one or more of the primary servers is unavailable or overloaded and one or more of the first layer overflow servers is unavailable or overloaded.

Multi-tiered server network

A comb light source and spectrometer is disclosed. The comb light source and spectrometer can include a plurality of light emitters, where each light emitter can be configured to emit light included in a plurality of wavelength bands. Each wavelength band can be separated from an adjacent wavelength band by a noise band. Due to the separated wavelength bands for a light emitter, any signal received outside of the one or more wavelength bands can originate from noise (e.g., drift, ambient light, electrical noise), thereby enhancing signal analysis and noise rejection. In some examples, the comb light emitters can be activated sequentially such that a plurality of wavelengths across a spectrum can be measured. In some examples, the resolution and the number of spectral lines in the comb light source can be tuned by changing the properties of the quantum dots and/or increasing the number of comb light emitters.

Multicomb light source and spectrometer

A system for tracking the capacity of a battery in a portable electronic device is described. While the portable electronic device remains plugged in to a power adapter, the system estimates the capacity of the battery by performing the following operations. The system measures a first open-circuit voltage for the battery while the battery rests at a first state of charge. Next, the system causes the battery to transition to a second state of charge. While the battery transitions to the second state of charge, the system integrates a current through the battery to determine a net change in charge for the battery. Next, the system measures a second open-circuit voltage for the battery while the battery rests at the second state of charge. Finally, the system estimates a capacity for the battery based on the first open-circuit voltage, the second open-circuit voltage and the net change in charge. This capacity measurement is repeated and the multiple results are fit to a line. The slope of fitted line is then used to estimate how the true battery capacity has faded since last measured using traditional methods that require the battery to be rested at a low state of charge.
