Certain aspects of the invention relate to an applicator, and methods of use thereof, which can house multiple component formulations in separate material receptacles, which can then be easily reconstituted at time of use without any assembly by the user. A device of the invention can be used for, but is not limited to, applying hydrogel formulations to dura mater, abdominal tissue in hernia repair, tissues near the spine, lung tissue, intestinal tissue, and any of the internal tissues. A device of the invention can be configured to apply a spray or a stream of liquid formulation onto a surface to be treated. A device of the invention can be configured to deliver the formulation through an endoscope or laparoscope.

Self-contained medical applicators for multiple component formulations, and methods of use thereof

One aspect of the invention relates to an applicator system, and methods of use thereof, that can be used to house separately one or more liquids and one or more solids (e.g., components of a polymerizable hydrogel). In certain embodiments, the applicator systems are further designed to facilitate the mixing of the solids and liquids inside the applicator. In addition, in certain embodiments, the applicator systems are also designed to facilitate the application of the mixture to a surface.

A method of treating snoring, includes injecting least one of a monomer composition, a polymer solution and a microparticle solution into a patient's soft palate, optionally with a least one of an additional medicament, bioactive agent, sclerotic agent or stiffening agent. The injected composition, if not already polymerized prior to injection, is allowed to polymerize to form a polymer within the soft palate, thereby stiffening the soft palate, rendering it resistant to palatal flutter.

An article of manufacture for dispensing an adhesive material, such as a synthetic or semi-synthetic polymerizable or cross-linkable monomer material, includes a container body, and a porous applicator tip having a proximal end that is attached to the container body, and a distal end located away from the container body, wherein the adhesive material is located in the container body in a non-contacting relationship with the applicator tip prior to dispensing the material. A flow pattern of the adhesive material within or on the applicator tip is controlled by providing one or more cuts in the applicator tip to alter flow properties of the adhesive material through the applicator tip.

An article of manufacture for dispensing an adhesive material, such as a synthetic or semi-synthetic polymerizable or cross-linkable monomer material, includes a container body, and a porous applicator tip having a proximal end that is attached to the container body, and a distal end located away from the container body, wherein the adhesive material is located in the container body in a non-contacting relationship with the applicator tip prior to dispensing the material. A flow pattern of the adhesive material within or on the applicator tip is controlled by controlling lengths of flow paths of the material through the applicator tip, forming one or more grooves in the applicator tip, providing a hollow, controlled thickness tip, and/or adding a cover surrounding at least a part but not all of an exposed area of the applicator tip.

A biocompatible monomer composition includes: (A) at least one monomer, which forms a medically acceptable polymer; (B) at least one plasticizing agent present in the composition in an amount of from 0.5 wt. % to 15 wt. % of the composition; and (C) at least one acidic stabilizing agent having a pK ionization constant of from about 1 to about 7. The composition can be applied to a variety of materials and is particularly suitable as in vivo tissue adhesive. A method of joining together in vivo two surfaces, e.g., body tissues, includes (a) holding damaged tissue edges together to form abutted tissue surfaces; (b) applying to the abutted tissue surfaces an excessive amount of a composition containing 1) at least one monomer, which forms a medically acceptable biodegradable polymer, 2) at least one plasticizing agent; and 3) at least one acidic stabilizing agent; and (c) maintaining the surfaces in contact until the composition polymerizes to form a thick film of polymerized composition bridging the abutted tissue surfaces.

Monomeric compositions effective as wound closure devices

A polymerizable 1,1-disubstituted ethylene formulation applicator includes polymerizable 1,1-disubstituted ethylene monomer. According to one embodiment, the monomer is surrounded by a container that may be engaged with an applicator tip The applicator tip has an internal cavity defined in an applicator tip body. A female fitting at an open end of the applicator tip body is in fluid communication with the cavity. A porous material member is connected to the applicator tip body to be in fluid communication with the internal cavity. The applicator tip may include a valve member disposed between the internal cavity and the porous material member. Also, the applicator tip may include a piercing or breaking member disposed substantially within the internal cavity. The container of monomer includes a male fitting that may be engaged with the female fitting of the applicator tip to form the applicator. The container also may include a polymerizable 1,1-disubstituted ethylene impervious barrier that may be pierced or broken by the piercing or breaking member when the male fitting is engaged with the female fitting. Depending on the particular application and the particular formulation, bioactive agents, viscosity modifiers, initiators, inhibitors and/or stabilizers may be added to the applicator, preferably in or on the porous material member. The container and one or more applicator tips form an applicator kit. Methods of applying a polymerizable 1,1-disubstituted ethylene formulation employ the various embodiments of the applicator tip, the applicator and the applicator kit, especially for the treatment of lacerated, burned, ulcerous, and laser-ablated tissues.

The pH-modified monomer and polymer compositions are useful as biomedical and surgical adhesives, sealants, implants and bioactive agent release carriers or matrices. They comprise a monomer or polymer; and an effective amount of an acidic or basic pH modifier effective to modify the pH of an immediate in vivo environment of the composition to a pH range at which the polymer biodegrades at a different rate than at physiologic pH. The invention also relates to in vivo applications in which surfaces are joined or treated with such pH-modified biocompatible compositions.

A method of joining together in vivo living tissue surfaces includes (a) holding together at least two tissue surfaces to form abutted tissue surfaces, (b) applying across the abutted tissue surfaces an excessive amount of an adhesive composition comprising at least one monomer that forms a medically acceptable polymer with an applicator having a porous applicator tip; and (c) maintaining the tissue surfaces in contact in vivo until the composition polymerizes to form a thick film of polymerized composition on the abutted tissue surface.

Methods of applying monomeric compositions effective as wound closure devices

A biocompatible monomer composition includes at least one monomer, which forms a medically acceptable polymer, and an effective amount of at least one heat dissipating agent sufficient to reduce exothermic polymerization temperature increase of the composition. The heat dissipating agent enhances patient comfort and prevents necrosis of living tissue normally encountered with such medical adhesives.
