A cutting tool includes a pocket with a top wall, a bottom wall, a side wall and a rear wall. The cutting tool has an insert cartridge and a wedge clamp. The threaded member exerts a force vector in a radial direction when threaded into the wedge clamp to place the cutting tool in a locked condition, and the wedge clamp exerts a force vector into the body of the cutting tool radially inward of an adjacent pocket, thereby reducing deflection of the adjacent pocket when the cutting tool is placed in the locked condition.

A cutting insert for a cutting tool is described. The cutting inserts generally square-shaped with two opposing surfaces and four peripheral side surfaces. Cutting edges are formed at the intersection between the first and second surfaces and the peripheral side surfaces. Each cutting edge is divided into a first portion, a second portion and a radius blend. The first portion has a length, L, and the second portion has a length, L, that is shorter than the first portion such that the radius blend is not located at a midpoint of the cutting edge, thereby increasing a height of the ninety-degree shoulder that can be cut by the cutting insert.

An indexable cutting insert having a top surface, a bottom surface, and a plurality of side surfaces. A main cutting edge, a ramping cutting edge, a wiper cutting edge, and a nose radius cutting edge are formed at the intersection between the top surface and the side surfaces. Two diagonally side surfaces further comprise a first side surface and a second side surface. The second side surface extends the entire length of the main cutting edge. The first and second side surfaces and two other side surfaces contact an insert pocket of the milling cutter when the cutting insert is mounted the insert pocket of the high-speed milling cutter, thereby providing four-point contact between the cutting insert and the insert pocket.

A cutting insert for heavy machining operations is described. The cutting insert has two opposing end surfaces, two identical opposing major side surfaces and two identical opposing minor side surfaces. The cutting insert further includes a major cutting edge formed at an intersection of each major edge and the end surface, and a minor cutting edge formed at an intersection of each minor edge and the end surface, and a corner cutting edge formed at an intersection of the major and minor cutting edges. The major cutting edge has a non-linear, variable slope with respect to a central axis Apassing through the two minor side surfaces of the cutting insert.

An indexable cutting insert having a triangular shape includes three sides and three cutting corners. A first planar surface and a second, parallel planar surface connects the three sides. In one embodiment, three major cutting edges are formed at an intersection between a respective side and the first planar surface. In another aspect, six major cutting edges are formed at an intersection between a respective side and the planar surfaces. In another aspect six major right-handed cutting edges and six major left-handed cutting edges are formed at an intersection between the sides and the first and second planar surfaces.

An indexable cutting insert includes a top surface, a bottom surface, a plurality of peripheral side surfaces, and a plurality of cutting edges formed at an intersection between said top surface and plurality of side surfaces. A plurality of triangular-shaped serrations are positioned along the cutting edges, each serration comprising an apex and a pair of side surfaces that meet at a vertex. The serrations provide the cutting edges with both a positive axial rake angle and a negative axial rake angle, thereby reducing delamination when machining a composite material.

The round cutting insert includes a plurality of projections formed on a first surface and another plurality of projections formed on an opposing surface. The round cutting insert is reversible and indexable. The round cutting insert is removably received in an insert receiving pocket in a tool body wherein the insert receiving pocket includes a plurality of dimples for receiving one of the plurality of first projections or the plurality of second projections. This arrangement prevents rotation of the round cutting insert while mounted in the insert receiving pocket.

A combination of a cutting insert and a shim. The cutting insert and shim have two opposing end surfaces with two identical opposing major side surfaces and two identical opposing minor side surfaces extending between the minor side surfaces. Each end surface of the insert has two lowered abutment members, each having a shim abutment surface for contacting the shim. One end surface of the shim has two raised abutment members, each having an insert abutment surface for contacting the insert. The abutment surfaces contact each other in an area where high cutting forces occur so as to help distribute the loads encountered in the cutting operation, as well as provide protection of the insert pocket in case of insert failure.

A cutting insert includes a top surface; a bottom surface; a plurality of clearance side surfaces extending between the top and bottom surfaces; a cutting edge formed at an intersection between the top surface and at least one of the plurality of clearance side surfaces; and a threaded hole extending from the bottom surface to a predetermined distance from the top surface. The threaded hole is capable of receiving an insert screw for mounting the cutting insert to a cutter body. A cutting insert comprises an elliptical cutting edge. The cutting insert has a mounting hole through which a retention screw may pass, wherein the retention screw makes contact with the mounting hole in a seating plane that is perpendicular to the mounting hole. The cutting insert is adapted for use in a cutting tool comprising a tool body having a pocket partially defined by a floor that is parallel to a seating plane. The insert can have a shape complimentary to a tool body so as to cooperate with the tool body to form a continuous flute. According to one embodiment of the invention, the insert has a flank edge inboard with respect to the tool body. An insert according to another embodiment of the invention has a rake face with a positive cutting geometry.

An insert retention screw having a head with a radius that is sufficient size to fit within a mounting hole of a cutting insert and seat within a seating plane within the mounting hole that is generally perpendicular to the axis of the insert when the screw is at an angle of about 0-15 degrees is disclosed. The retention screw provided for holding a cutting insert in the pocket of a tool body. The pocket is partially defined by a floor and a seating surface. A threaded hole is at an angle that is taken with reference to the pocket floor. The insert has a mounting hole passing therethrough. The retention screw passed through the mounting hole and threads into the threaded hole so as to draw the insert against the seating surface.

A tool holder includes a shank portion, a head portion that includes an insert pocket defined by a seat surface, a first or radial support sidewall and a second or axial support sidewall, and a spherical contact point protruding from one of the first and second support sidewalls. The spherical contact point minimizes a contact area between a cutting insert mounted in the insert pocket and one of the first and second support sidewalls of the insert pocket. In one embodiment, the radial support sidewall includes two spherical contact points, and the axial support sidewall includes one spherical contact point. The spherical contact point may be formed by inserting a rivet-like structure into an aperture formed in the support sidewalls of the pocket.
