A method and system for exposing a version-independent interface to a computer resource. The interface system exposes a version-independent interface to a computer resource, such as a database or computer program. The interface system also provides a version-dependent interface to the computer resource that is typically not exposed. When the computer resource is modified, the version-dependent interface may be modified, but the version-independent interface might not be modified. When the version-dependent interface is modified, a mapping is generated (in some cases automatically) between the version-independent interface and the version-dependent interface. When an accessing computer program uses the version-independent interface to request services of the computer resource, the system uses the mapping to map the request to a request that is appropriate for the version-dependent interface.

Techniques to track and publish changes to object instances. For an 'outbound process' to publish object instances, a list of object instances is initially received. For each received object instance, a determination is made whether or not the object instance has changed since its last publication. For each changed object instance, a delta snapshot is generated and includes data indicative of changes between the current and last published versions of the object instance. Delta snapshots for all changed object instances are then published. For an 'inbound process' to receive object instances, the published delta snapshots are initially received. For each received delta snapshot, the corresponding object instance is retrieved and updated with the changes included in the delta snapshot. A new snapshot is also generated for each updated object instance such that the received changes are not published, and unpublished changes made locally are noted for subsequent publication.

A mechanism and system are provided for making available information that identifies participants of a distributed operation by registering the information with a name service. Once the participant information has been registered with the name service, the name service supplies the information to entities that request it. An example of a distributed operation is a distributed transaction executed by two or more database servers.

To publish data, a publishing client transmits a publication request to a name service. The publication request may specify a modification entity and a duration entity. The name service creates at least one name entry that associates the published data with the modification entity and the duration entity. There are several requests to modify or depublish published data that a name service will honor only when they originate from a modification entity. These are (1) requests to modify published data, and (2) requests to depublish published data. A name service depublishes published data based on the termination of the duration entity that is associated with the published data, when, for example, a garbage collector detects that the duration of an entity has ended. Name service recovery is performed on a system failure. The remaining name service daemons delete each name entry that is non-local and non-persistant, and transmit requests to replicate local name entries to the other surviving name service daemons. A name service persistently stores name entries as specified. When restarted, the name service may continue to provide the persistently stored name entries. Persistent name entries are not depublished during name service recovery. They are explicitly modified or depublished by a modification entity.

A method and system are provided for reconfiguring a multiple node system after an epoch change in a manner that reduces the overhead and system unavailability typically incurred during reconfiguration. A resource-to-master mapping is established using the combination of a resource-to-bucket hash function and a bucket-to-node hash function. The resource-to-bucket hash function is not changed in response to an epoch change. The bucket-to-node hash function does change in response to epoch changes. Techniques are disclosed for adjusting the dynamic bucket-to-node hash function after an epoch change in a manner that load balances among the new number of nodes in the system. Further, the changes to the bucket-to-node assignments are performed in a way that reduces the number of resources that have to be remastered. In one embodiment, only those resources that lose their masters during an epoch change are assigned new masters during an initial reconfiguration. Load balancing is then gradually achieved by migrating resources after the system has been made available. The old masters of resources forward access requests to new masters of resources once they have transferred the master resource objects for the requested resources. In addition, techniques are disclosed for migrating resources from a node in anticipation of a planned shutdown of the node.
