In an example, an integrated optical circuit (IOC) includes a first substrate formed of a first material and a first waveguide formed of a second material and positioned on the first substrate. The first waveguide includes a plurality of branches and is configured to polarize light beams that propagate through the first waveguide. The IOC further includes a second substrate formed of a third material, the second substrate coupled to or positioned on the first substrate. The IOC further includes a plurality of straight waveguides formed in the second substrate, each of the plurality of straight waveguides optically coupled to a respective branch of the plurality of branches of the first waveguide. The IOC further includes a plurality of electrodes positioned proximate to the plurality of straight waveguides, the plurality of electrodes configured to modulate the phase of light beams that propagate through the plurality of straight waveguides.

Integrated environmentally insensitive modulator for interferometric gyroscopes

An integrated optical circuit comprises a first waveguide section of a first material having a first index of refraction, a second waveguide section diffused with a second material, different from the first material, the second waveguide section having a second index of refraction; and a third waveguide section of the first material. A portion of the first waveguide section at a first interface is angled at a first angle and a portion of the second waveguide section is angled at the first angle. A portion of the first waveguide section at a second interface is angled at a second angle and a portion of the third waveguide section is angled at the second angle. The first angle and second angle are selected such that the angle of incidence of light at the first and second interfaces is greater than the Brewster's angle.

Integrated optic circuit with waveguides stitched at supplementary angles for reducing coherent backscatter

Systems and methods for environmentally insensitive high-performance fiber-optic gyroscopes are provided. In one embodiment, a loop closure electronics apparatus for a fiber optic gyroscope having an optical phase modulator characterized by a transfer function that includes an error component of at least second order is provided. The apparatus comprises: a first digital circuit that generates a digital bias modulation signal; a second digital circuit that generates a digital feedback signal; at least one digital-to-analog converter that produces an electrical signal that drives the phase modulator from the digital bias modulation signal and the digital feedback signal; and a compensator that includes an analog filter of at least second order and a digital filter of at least second order, wherein the analog filter and the digital filter pre-filter the electrical signal to compensate for the error component.

Systems and methods for environmentally insensitive high-performance fiber-optic gyroscopes

Methods and devices for polarizing light in a proton exchange polarizer where cross-coupling of unwanted modes of light is reduced with an integrated spatial filter. An optically transmissive substrate such as a substrate created from LiNbOor LiTaOhas side surfaces, which reflect unguided TM mode light. The light originates from an input fiber. The input fiber is connected to the substrate at one end and an output fiber is connected to receive guided TE mode light at the opposite end. The spatial filter is positioned at the primary reflection position of the light with respect to the sides of the polarizer. To improve extinction further, the spatial filter can also be located at secondary reflection points in another alternate embodiment.

Devices and methods for spatial filtering

A method is provided for stabilizing an electro-optic substrate employed in a waveguide device. The method comprises cleaning a surface of the substrate, and exposing the device to a reactive oxide to passivate the surface. A layer of sealant is deposited on the substrate in a vacuum to seal the surface.
