A mounting device that securely supports an electronic device to a surface such as a vehicle dashboard. The mounting device comprises a flexible base for placement on a mounting surface and a bendable frame attached to or otherwise coupled with the base to permit the base to be shaped to at least partially conform to contours on the mounting surface. The base may be partially formed of a material that provides sufficient friction between its lower surface and the mounting surface to resist unwanted movement. The frame may be formed of aluminum and may include a central portion and a plurality of appendages each independently movable about at least two axes of movement. Each of the appendages may include a connecting link joined to the central portion and a pair of arms extending from the connecting link and movable relative to one another and relative to the central portion.

A friction mount apparatus for supporting an electronic device () on a surface (). The apparatus () includes a body (), anchors (), and a receiving member (). Body () includes a recessed surface () on the bottom thereof into which a foam layer () is secured, wherein the foam layer () contacts a mounting surface () and resists moving relative to the surface (). The anchors () are connected to the body () via flexible necks () and have bottom surfaces formed of soft material and weighted cores to press the bottom surfaces against the mounting surface to resist movement relative to the mounting surface () and thus further stabilize the apparatus (). The receiving member () is secured to a top surface of the body () and is adapted to releasably retain an electronic device ().

A navigation assembly () for mounting a navigational device () in an open port () of a vehicle resulting from removal of a non-navigational component is provided. The navigation assembly () broadly comprises a mounting assembly () and the navigational device (). The mounting assembly () is mounted within the open port (), and the navigational device () is fixedly or removably attached to the mounting assembly (), such that the navigational device () may be linearly raised or lowered between two viewing positions that are in a general linear relationship to each other. The navigational device () is operable to pivot left and right within the open port (). A GPS system () which may be mounted on a dashboard () of any vehicle () after the vehicle has been manufactured yet appears to be integral with the dashboard. The GPS system () includes a GPS device (), a hood () for covering the GPS device, a base () for supporting the GPS device and the hood on the vehicle dashboard, and a faceplate () for placement over the front face of the GPS device for framing the GPS display.

Systems, devices and methods are provided which include a rugged, waterproof, navigation device having a touch panel. The device includes a portable, and/or handheld navigation device. The navigation device includes a processor and a memory adapted to communicate with the processor. The memory is adapted to store navigation related data, the navigation related data including cartographic data including a number of locations and data indicative of thoroughfares of a plurality of types connecting certain ones of the locations. The device includes a housing having an opening. A touch panel is mounted in the opening of the housing. The touch panel and housing forming a substantially waterproof enclosure. A navigation component is located within the substantially waterproof enclosure.

An electronic device includes a housing, a processor located within the housing and a memory in communication with the processor. The electronic device includes a display in communication with the processor and a touch panel positioned on a surface of the housing. The display is viewable through a touch panel mounted to an opening in the housing. The housing includes a flange around the opening which has a fluid seal to prevent fluid flow past the touch panel and into the housing. A shock mount may also be included within the housing to make the touch panel drop-resistant.

A device and method for enclosing electronics in a waterproof environment and transferring the heat generated by the electronics to an external environment is provided. The device includes a housing and a heat sink. The housing includes top and bottom pieces that are sealed to one another forming an interior portion. The interior portion houses electronic components. A face plate is coupled to the front of the housing and includes an opening that is sealed with a hinged door. A fastening mechanism securely fastens the heat sink to the housing so that a substantial portion of the heat sink is in contact with the back side of housing. Heat sink includes a base and a plurality of fins that are adapted to transfer heat generated by the electronic components within the interior of the housing to an external environment.

An apparatus is provided for removably mounting an electronic device to a surface and for positioning the device with respect to the surface. The apparatus includes a cradle securable to the electronic device and a pivot link, which has a first end and a second end. The first end being pivotally coupled to the cradle. The apparatus also includes a support having a mounting pedestal coupled thereto. The second end of the pivot link is pivotally coupled to the support. The apparatus has a base which has a lower face that can be coupled to the surface and an upper face. The upper face has a receiving slot for the pedestal, the slot having a shoulder extending thereabove to engage the pedestal. The slot further has an open end to allow the pedestal to be moved within the slot. The base further includes a releasable locking arm having a retaining ridge located in line with the open end of the slot to selectively hold the pedestal within the slot. The pedestal of the apparatus can be placed within the slot and held within the slot by the retaining ridge of the locking arm. Further, the electronic device can be positioned with respect to the surface by pivoting the cradle and the link, and by rotating the pedestal within the slot. In an alternate embodiment, a suction cup mount is utilized.
