A cordless, hand-held power tool, such as a hammer drill/driver, a drill/driver, an impact driver, an impact wrench, etc., that includes a brushless direct current ('BLDC') motor. Each of the hand-held power tool includes a removable and rechargeable battery pack, electronics, and a BLDC motor that have been designed and balanced to produce a high-performance-capable (e.g., high-power, high-current, high-torque) hand-held power tool. The hand-held power tool is capable of delivering high instantaneous (i.e., short duration) current to the BLDC motor for short-duration high power operation and high continuous (i.e., long duration) current to the BLDC motor for long duration high power operation. Additionally, the short and long duration power is capable of being provided in a smaller (in size) and lighter (in weight).

A method of cooling an electric motor configured for use in a power tool. The electric motor has a motor shaft rotatable about a motor axis. The power tool further includes a fan assembly attachable to the motor shaft and an energy storage device coupled to the motor shaft and to the fan assembly. The method includes activating the electric motor to supply torque to the motor shaft. The method further includes rotating the motor shaft and the fan assembly about the motor axis. The fan assembly generates an airflow to cool the electric motor. Moreover, the method includes supplying torque from the electric motor to the energy storage device and deactivating the electric motor to stall rotation of the motor shaft. The fan assembly continues to rotate about the motor axis to generate the airflow after rotation of the motor shaft has ceased.

Inertial fan for power tool

A power tool includes a housing, a battery connection portion supported by the housing, a drive mechanism configured to operate a working element, and a brushless DC motor positioned within the housing and connected to the drive mechanism. The motor includes a rotor, stator surrounding the motor, and an output shaft fixed to the rotor such that movement of the rotor is transmitted to the output shaft. The motor also includes a fan coupled to the output shaft to rotate with the output shaft and the rotor, and a brass bushing fixed to the output shaft to rotate with the rotor and the output shaft relative to the stator. The bushing includes a balancing feature.

Electric motor for a power tool

Power tools described herein include a housing, a brushless direct current (DC) motor, a non-conductive terminal mount, and a plurality of terminals. The housing has a motor housing portion, a handle portion, and a battery pack interface. The brushless DC motor is located within the motor housing portion and has a rotor and a stator. The non-conductive terminal mount is located on an outer peripheral surface of the stator and includes an angled surface. The angled surface is not substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the motor. The plurality of terminals is mounted on the angled surface of the terminal mount. Each of the terminals is angled in a first direction such that the terminals are not substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the motor.

Brushless motor for a power tool

An electric motor for use with a power tool includes a rotor having a body, a stator having a plurality of electromagnetic coils surrounding the rotor, an output shaft coupled to the rotor for rotation with the rotor, and a plurality of magnets positioned within the body of the rotor. The motor also includes a mechanical magnet holder coupled to at least one of the rotor and the output shaft to engage each of the plurality of magnets. The mechanical magnet holder inhibits movement of the plurality of magnets out of the body of the rotor.

A power tool includes a motor having a motor shaft that rotates about a motor axis in a first rotational direction. The power tool also includes a fan assembly attachable to the motor shaft for rotation in the first rotational direction. The fan assembly includes a fan body, a bearing having a race that rotates with the fan body, and a flywheel rotatably affixed to the fan body. The race is freely rotatable relative to the motor shaft in the first rotational direction, and fixed against rotation relative to the motor shaft in a second rotational direction opposite the first rotational direction. The flywheel has a central portion that defines a central bore, and the race is received into the central bore and rotatably affixed to the flywheel.
