A fitment for use with a flexible container having a lower fitment member with a fluid conducting opening in a top surface and an upper fitment member with an upper fitment opening in an upper fitment bottom surface where the fluid conducting opening and the upper fitment opening form a fluid passageway or conduit. A wall of the flexible container is compressibly held between the top surface of the lower fitment member and the upper fitment bottom surface. The fitment may also include one or more additional walls of one or more additional flexible containers forming a bag-in-a-bag structure.

An electrochemical sensor with a gelled membrane for prolonging the useful life of an ion-selective electrode. The gelled membrane is a hydrophilic membrane having a specially-formulated gel layer coated on one side. The gel-coated side of the gelled membrane is in intimate contact with the ion-selective membrane and separates the ion-selective membrane from the test samples and the calibration and cleaning fluids. The gelled membrane is a semi-permeable barrier which allows passage of the species to be measured while inhibiting the passage of surfactant and proteinaceous material into the polymeric ion-selective membrane.

A method of determining the total carbon dioxide concentration in plasma (TCO.sub.2 plasma) directly from a whole blood sample involves adjusting total carbon dioxide concentration measured in the whole blood sample (TCO.sub.2 whole blood) using a volume dilution factor (VDF) to give a value that is equivalent to TCO.sub.2 plasma.

A CO.sub.2 electrode can be calibrated with two PCO.sub.2 calibration standard solutions having known pH values and known bicarbonate ion source concentrations. An O.sub.2 electrode can be calibrated using air as one calibration standard and a solution containing an excess of an O.sub.2 depleting agent as a second calibration standard.
