The invention relates to printing of documents, for example bank checks. According to the various aspects of the invention, a printing system, process and product with microprinting are provided. Documents printed as described may include digitally variable microprint and other enhancements. The invention is particularly useful for enhanced security documents and the production thereof.

An electrostatographic recording method for printing an image on a receiver comprising the steps of: operating a primary charger to establish a uniform primary voltage level on an image recording member; developing a control patch on the image recording member, measuring density of the control patch to thereby provide a density measurement signal; converting the image into a digital bitmap comprised of an array of pixels wherein each pixel is assigned a digital value representing marking information; rendering the digital bitmap by defining each pixel as either a background pixel, interior pixel, or an edge pixel and reassigning the digital value of one or more of edge pixels or interior pixels independently and as a function of the density measurement signal; modulating electrostatic charge on the image recording member as a function of the digital bitmap after rendering.

Post rip image rendering in an electrographic printer using density patch feedback

An electrostatographic recording apparatus and method wherein a primary charger establishes a uniform electrostatic charge on an electrophotoconductive image recording member in accordance with a first operating parameter. A recording device imagewise modulates the charge on the image recording member to form electrostatic latent images in accordance with a second operating parameter and also forms a developable process control patch. A development station develops the electrostatic latent images and the control patch on the image recording member with toner in accordance with a third operating parameter. A replenishment device provides toner to the development station at a controlled rate in accordance with a replenishment signal. A sensor senses density of the control patch developed by the development station; and a controller is responsive to density of the control patch and provides adjustments to the first, second and third operating parameters and controls a reference signal used to generate the replenishment signal as a function of a parameter related to one of the first, second or third operating parameters. Preferably the controller controls the reference signal as a function of the parameter related to the first operating parameter, primary voltage setpoint.

Method and apparatus for control of variability in charge to mass ratio

An electrostatographic recording method and apparatus includes an auto cycle-up routine for establishing readiness of various stations including a toning station for proper operation. In the automatic cycle-up routine proper operation of a toning station warmer is determined by a controller. The controller then establishes a first cycle-up duration when the toning station warmer is determined to be operating satisfactorily and a second and longer cycle-up duration when the toning station warmer is determined to be not operating satisfactorily.

A solid state image sensor is described which includes a planarizing layer incorporated into a means of color separation. The planarizing layer has been found to provide a smooth, uniform surface for coating and adhesion of a color separator within the active device area. The planarizing layer remains on the completed device and is patterned to permit access to bonding pads. Negative photoresist materials, photoinitiated polymerization imaging systems and positive imaging systems may be selected for use as the planarizing layer.

Stabilization of a patterned planarizing layer for solid state imagers

A color filter array is disclosed comprised of red, green, and blue filters forming an interlaid pattern. Each of the red, green, and blue filters is formed of two superimposed filter layers, each made up of a different subtractive primary dye. Layers of controlled thickness containing a single dye permit precise control of filter density and hue. The color filter array can form part of a viewable display unit or form part of an image sensor.
