Approaches for managing characteristics for inbound data communications between a first network site and a remote network site of a WAN are provided. The inbound communications are received by the first network site via a series of links of the WAN. Protocol overhead factors are determined based on overhead associated with network protocols applied to the data communications over the links. Link throughput limits are determined for the inbound data communications, wherein the throughput limits are determined based on the protocol overhead factors. The throughput limits are transmitted to the second network site for transmission of the inbound data communications from the second network site. The inbound data communications are received by a first device of the first network site via the first link, wherein the first link is between the first device and a second device serving as an exit point from a public portion of the WAN.

System and method for providing quality of service over dedicated local loop networks

A network management method comprises configuring network domains (NDs) of a host communications network (HCN). Each ND provides a virtual network (VN) provisioned within the HCN for an enterprise customer, which forms a virtual communications subnetwork from which the enterprise customer provisions communications services. The HCN provides bandwidth over outroute and inroute channels of the HCN for the VNs. Outroute partitions are configured via outroute channels of the HCN and inroute partitions are configured via inroute channel groups configured within inroute channels of the HCN. Each outroute partition supports outroute bandwidth and each inroute partition supports inroute bandwidth. The outroute capacity partitions and the inroute capacity partitions are allocated to VNs to provide outroute and inroute capacity to the VN. Operator classifications are configured within the ND associated with the VC. Each classification specifies network operator capabilities allocated to VN operators assigned to that classification.

System and method for provision and management of segmented virtual networks within a physical communications network

An apparatus, method, and system for quality of service over dedicated local loop networks is provided. Information regarding uplink and downlink speeds, and information regarding WAN interface protocol and encapsulation mode, is received from a network device. A link throughput limit is calculated based on the uplink speed of the network device, and a link throughput limit is set based on the calculated uplink throughput limit. An uplink network protocol overhead of the network device is calculated based on the WAN interface protocol and encapsulation mode of the uplink device and is factored in upstream available bandwidth calculations. Communication data size(s) are set based on the calculated uplink network protocol overhead. The downlink throughput limit is set to match the downlink speed based on the downlink speed and WAN network protocol overhead. The WAN network protocol overhead is factored in the downstream available bandwidth calculations and communication data sizes.

An approach for transmission of data packets, based on virtual frame timing, over a communications channel is provided. A remote terminal receives a first stream of data packets at periodic time intervals. The terminal receives an allocation of time slots within a sequence of TDMA transmission frames, for transmission of the data packets over the channel. The timing structure of the allocated time slots is based on a virtual frame size relative to the interval timing of the first data packet stream, and independent of the frame size/timing of the TDMA transmission frames. The remote terminal may receive a second stream of data packets at periodic time intervals that differ from the time intervals of the first stream. In a multi-stream scenario, the virtual frame size for the time slot allocation is based on the greatest common denominator of the interval timings of the first and second data streams.

Virtual data framing for data packet transmission over channels of a communications network

A data communications system has a layered communication architecture including network services protocols including a link layer and higher level protocols, and has IBM or IBM-compatible synchronous data link control (SDLC) devices including a host computer and a plurality of end user devices desiring to communicate across an X.25 packet-switching network (PSN) of the communications system. A packet assembler/disassembler (PAD) support X.25 communication across the PSN between the SDLC-utilizing host computer and the SDLC-utilizing end user device. In one embodiment, separate high level data link control (HDLC) PADs are provided at each end of the PSN operationally associated with the host computer and the plurality of end user devices, respectively. The PADS generate and respond to at least three formats of SDLC commands and responses, and, in association with their respective SDLC devices, perform at least four functions including a call setup phase, a data transfer phase, a call clearing phase, and handling of abnormal conditions. PAD means comprises qualified logical link control (QLLC) PAD means located at an end of said packet switching network for either operational association with said host computer or operational association with said plurality of end user devices. In another embodiment, a single qualified logical link control (QLLC) PAD performs functions similar to those of the HDLC PAD embodiment, except that rather than having a PAD at both ends (host end and terminal end) of a connection, a PAD is provided at only one end of the connection.
