In a pocket fiber optic cleaver having an elongated substantially cylindrical body arrayed along a longitudinal body axis, the body having, in longitudinal sequence, a fiber entry port, a cut-length adjusting section, a cleaving area, and a waste fiber exit port, and including a cylindrical bore, concentric with the longitudinal axis for receiving an optical fiber, the improvement wherein the cleaving area comprises: a cleaving pad in the form of a cylindrical section whose longitudinal axis is arrayed orthogonal to the body axis; a spring loaded pivot arm adjacent the cleaving pad, the arm carrying a fiber scoring member and having its pivot point adjacent the exit port, the fiber scoring member being adjacent the cut-length area; and a pressure pad surrounding the scoring member on three sides, the open side facing the cut-length section.

Hybrid plug assembly

An optical fiber-lens connector assembly maintains a critical fiber-to-lens interface during temperature excursions over the range of -40.degree. C. to +60.degree. C. by employing a spring loaded bushing mounted within a connector body. The fiber is fixed to the bushing and the spring acting on the bushing keeps the fiber accurately located with respect to the lens when the lens body grows and shrinks with the temperature changes.

An optical fiber lens-connector assembly includes a plastic lens body joined to a tubular connector of a low thermal expansion glass. The connector includes a glass fiber guide formed of the same material (e.g., a borosilicate glass) having a substantially similar expansion coefficient. The assembly provides greater temperature stability when cycled over a wide temperature range. Fused silica quartz can also be employed as the connector material.

An optical fiber lens-connector assembly includes a plastic lens body joined to a connector of a low thermal expansion metal. The connector includes a glass capillary tube formed of a material (e.g., a borosilicate glass) having a substantially similar expansion coefficient. The assembly provides greater temperature stability when cycled over a wide temperature range.

A fiber optic cleaving tool includes, as one half of a clamping member, an elongated cleaver base pad which has one end fixed to an anvil which is mounted adjacent a cutter blade. The base pad includes alignment means, which can be upraised walls, for removably receiving a fiber guide pad having a groove therein for accepting a specific size of optical fiber. To work with a different fiber size, only the fiber guide pad is replaced, and thus the necessary critical alignment of the fiber with the cutting blade is maintained.
