A self power circuit for ion sense circuitry is provided. The self power circuit is configured to supply the voltages required to generate and measure an ion current flow in a combustion chamber of an engine. The power circuit stores power from the current flow in the ignition coil secondary circuit during at least a portion of a sparking period for use during the ion current measurement period between sparking events. Ion current generation voltage as well as positive and negative sensor circuit power supply voltages are generated in one embodiment.

An automatic variable gain amplifier is provided. The automatic variable gain amplifier automatically adjusts the amplification of a signal, and in one embodiment, an ion signal, based on the amplitude of the peaks of the signal. The automatic variable gain amplifier detects the peaks of the signal, compares them to a threshold value, and, based on this comparison, varies the amount by which the signal is amplified. The automatic variable gain amplifier produces a composite output waveform for an input waveform with an amplitude that may vary over a plurality of orders of magnitude.

A system and method for controlling knock in a lean burn internal combustion (IC) engine includes a spark plug having an electrode, an electrical circuit, and a controller. The electrical circuit is configured to provide a first voltage to the electrode and detect an ion current during a thermal-ionization phase of the combustion process, and provide a second voltage to the electrode to create a spark and initiate a combustion process within the combustion chamber. The controller is configured to monitor the ion current for a knock condition that includes at least an incipient knock condition, determine a crank angle of the IC engine where the incipient knock occurs, and adjust timing of the IC engine to operate at a crank angle that does not exceed a threshold level beyond inception of incipient knock.

Method and system for closed loop combustion control of a lean-burn reciprocating engine using ionization detection

A system and method for controlling knock in a lean burn internal combustion (IC) engine includes a spark plug having an electrode, and an electrical circuit configured to provide a first voltage to the electrode and detect an ion current during a thermal-ionization phase of the combustion process, and provide a second voltage to the electrode to create a spark and initiate a combustion process within a combustion chamber. The engine includes a controller configured to monitor the ion current for a knock condition that includes at least an incipient knock condition, determine a spark crank angle timing of the IC engine where the incipient knock occurs, and adjust the spark timing of the IC engine to operate at a crank angle that does not exceed a threshold level beyond an incipient knock set point.

An ignition system for an engine includes an exciter circuit for use with an igniter, the exciter circuit having a step-up transformer the utilizes a relatively low voltage in its primary to produce a high voltage pulse that is applied to the igniter to create ionization and breakdown. The system also utilizes a low voltage high energy circuit to provide high current energy to the igniter after initial breakdown and during the plasma arc phase. The high energy circuit is decoupled from the step-up transformer so that high current is conducted through a bypass diode rather than through the transformer.

Ignition system and method

The magnitude of successive peaks in a time varying electrical signal are measured by applying the signal to magnitude circuitry capable of providing an output related to signal magnitude. The circuitry has a first state during which the output is dependent of changes in signal magnitude and a second state during which the output is substantially independent of such changes. The circuitry enters the first state during a first time interval within which a first peak is applied to the magnitude circuitry, and during a second time interval within which a second peak is applied to the magnitude circuitry. During a third time interval intermediate the first and second time intervals, the circuitry enters the second state. The magnitude circuitry's output during the second time interval is independent of its output during the third time interval so that successive outputs of the circuitry are related to the respective magnitudes of said successive peaks.
