A portable device having improved configurability and adaptability. The portable device has a case or chassis that can be placed in either an open or closed position, to thereby allow for insertion and removal of other devices within the portable device. When increased functionality is required or desired, the device's case is expanded by placing it in an open position, to allow additional devices to be operated in conjunction with the portable device. These devices can provide various types of electronic or computer operations, such as electronic adapters or media drives, as well as mechanical operations such as air movement with one or more additional fans or other types of heat sink. When decreased functionality is required or desired, such as to reduce the overall size and weight of the portable device, the device's case is contracted by placing it in a closed position. This allows on-demand expansion and contraction capability for the portable device. The expandable case provides dual functionality by also providing improved cooling for the portable device when in an open position.

A data processing system, method, and computer program product are disclosed which include a display screen within a housing. The housing includes a horizontal mechanism parallel to a horizontal side of the display screen and a vertical mechanism parallel to a vertical side of the display screen. The display screen includes a display area and an image alteration area. The image alteration area may be accessed through the vertical and horizontal mechanisms. An input may be received at a discrete point along one of the mechanisms. In response to a receipt of an input, an image displayed within the display area is magnified.

In an Internet processor, it is determined when a potential transmission of information over an Internet connection is about to occur. When a transmission is about to occur, a message is displayed to the user setting forth the information about to be transmitted, and indicating the address of the Internet server to which the information is about to be transmitted. The user of the Internet processor is given the option of canceling the transmission or continuing with the transmission.

A system and method for providing access to displayed data by determining what data should be supplied to an application when the application attempts to access data that is either not present, or not authorized to be accessed. In order to carry out the method of the present invention, a request for data of a first process is received from a second process. At the first process, a resolution to the request for data received from the second process is generated and the generated resolution is transmitted from the first process to the second process. The step of generating the resolution may comprise the steps of: transmitting a request for additional information relating to the request for data from the first process to the second process, receiving a response to the request for additional information from the second process, and generating, at the first process, a resolution to the request for data received from the second process based on the response to the request for additional information received from the second process.

System and method for providing access to displayed data

The present system and method improves the way of forwarding a reference from an importing module to an exporting module. The present system and method allow forwarding of a reference(s) through a forwarder exporting module for a specified export(s) when an explicit entrypoint(s) does/do not exist for the specified export(s) in the forwarder exporting module and still allow correlation from the importing module to the exporting module when the loader is loading the importing module during a load time. One or more implicit forwarder record(s) is stored in the exporting module by a linker. Each implicit forwarder record designates a respective target module. The loader determines whether an explicit entrypoint exists in the exporting module for the reference of the specified export. The loader resolves the reference by using the explicit entrypoint to determine a location of the specified export if the explicit entrypoint exists. The loader searches in a defined sequential order for the location of the specified export in a target module designated by a respective implicit forwarder record if the explicit entrypoint does not exist. The loader resolves the reference by using the implicit forwarder record if the specified export is found in a target module.

A mounting apparatus is disclosed to allow a wrist pad to be rotationally mounted to a forward end of a computer. The wrist pad is operably coupled to a leg near the rearward end of the computer. Rotation of the wrist pad causes a linkage to draw the leg inward into the computer or extend the leg outward from the computer. The wrist pad can be placed in a storage configuration against an exterior surface of the computer or the wrist pad can be placed in a configuration in front of the computer or on top of a keyboard when the computer is opened and configured for use. Placing the wrist pad in at least two operable positions gives the user flexibility in relieving pressure points along the user's lower arm and hand area. Also, placing the wrist pad in a storage configuration makes the exterior surface of the stored pad coplanar with the exterior surface of the computer. Accordingly, one surface of the computer has an angled or beveled surface to accommodate the stored wrist pad and to abut with a working surface when the leg or legs are extended.

An apparatus which allows a user to use any desired combination of keyboard, input device, and display to operate and control either of two computer systems. The switching apparatus is in a computer system comprising a display adapter operable to output a display signal, an input adapter operable to receive a keyboard signal and a pointing device signal, a display device operable to receive a display signal, a keyboard operable to output a keyboard signal, and a pointing device operable to output a pointing device signal. The switching apparatus comprises a display switching circuit connected to the display signal and connectable to an external display signal, operable to select between the display signal and the external display signal and output the selected signal to the display device or to an external display device; a keyboard switching circuit connected to the keyboard signal and connectable to an external keyboard signal, operable to select between the keyboard signal and the external keyboard signal and output the selected signal to the input adapter or to an external computer system; and a pointing device switching circuit connected to the pointing device signal and connectable to an external pointing device signal, operable to select between the pointing device signal and the pointing device keyboard signal and output the selected signal to the input adapter or to an external computer system.

Synchronizing copies of a first document in a distributed computing environment. According to a preferred embodiment, a path to a preferred repository for the first document and a path to a master repository for the first document are embedded in a second document. A copy of the first document is retrieved from the preferred repository. The master repository is checked to determine whether the retrieved copy is a copy of a most recent version of the first document. In response to the determination that the retrieved copy is the most recent version of the first document, the second document is formatted using the retrieved copy.
