A system, apparatus, method and article for high definition audio modems are described. The apparatus may include a communications path comprising a communications bus and buffers, a codec to couple to the communications bus, and a processor to couple to the communications bus. The processor may be arranged to execute instructions for a software modem to determine a round trip delay value for a communications path, and adjust the round trip delay value by varying input to one of the buffers. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Techniques for high definition audio modems

A Digital Impairment detection scheme which is designed for providing reliable estimate of digital impairments such as PAD, and CODEC type in the presence of digital impairments such as Robbed Bit Signalling and non G.711 complaint network CODECs and analog impairments such as IMD, noise and changing line conditions. This estimate is used to derive optimum transmit symbol constellations for a modem connected digitally to a trunk so as to maximize its data transmission rate.

Pad and CODEC detection

An Inter-modulation distortion measurement and correction method which could be applied over a communication channel that is a combination of either or both analog and digital channels. This method is applicable for a communication system between a modem pair.

Inter-modulation distortion compensation

Techniques to ensure reconnection between a modem and a server modem on hold. A first communication path between a modem and a sever modem may be interrupted to open a second communication path between a telephone and a third party terminal. When the second communication path is terminated, the techniques ensure reconnection to the first communication path by requesting the central office to cycle among paths until a server modem that is ready to reconnect is detected.
