A solution for spontaneous sharing between a sharer and a recipient device of a media asset reference for a media asset purchased through a media service by a user of the sharer device using a short-range wireless protocol is described. The reference includes a network resolvable identifier of a media service from which the media asset was purchased and an identifier of the media asset. The reference can also include the identity of the user who purchased and is sharing the reference thus allowing the media service to track distribution of its asset and provide an incentive based on sharing if desired when the recipient user sends a request for the media asset via the Internet to the media service including the media asset reference.

Methods and systems for generating time-based identifiers that are used for identifying items is described. In one embodiment, a master key is assigned to an electronic tag. Time-based other keys are generated based on the master key. Time-based identifiers are generated based on the time-based other keys. The time-based identifiers are useful only for a period of time to a holder of the time-based other keys.

A web navigation system includes a virtual link creator that creates an electronic file that contains positional data of a physical location and a web address of a web page associated with the physical location. A virtual link server system receives the electronic file. The server system can transmit the electronic file to any remote receiver system that is near the physical location via a communication network. A receiver system, capable of communicating with the server system and accessing external Internet, receives the electronic file from the server system when the receiver system is near the physical location such that the web address of the web page is virtually posted at the physical location without employing a physical object to host the web address at the physical location. A system for creating such a virtual link is also described. Also described is a system for virtually posting a web address of a web page associated with a physical location.

Creating a virtual link between a physical location and its web representation

A system for providing Internet-related services to a handheld device is described. The system includes a client module embedded in the handheld device to enable the handheld device to send a Universal Resource Locator (URL) via a communication link. The URL indicates a desired web page. The system also includes a receiver that receives the URL sent from the handheld device via the communication link. A web access module is coupled to the receiver and external Internet to access and retrieve the desired web page from a remote web server via the external Internet. A render system is coupled to the web access module to render the retrieved web page to the user of the handheld device.

System for providing internet-related services in response to a handheld device that is not required to be internet-enabled

A system for authenticating the location of a client system accessing a web server system associated with a physical entity includes a location beacon adjacent to the physical entity. The location beacon transmits a first beacon signal containing a web address of the web server system and a token that expires within a predetermined time period. A beacon receiver in the client system receives the first beacon signal, and sends a first request having the token and a key generated by a random number generator in the client system to the web server system. A location authentication module in the web server system retrieves the key from the first request if the token has not expired. A location authentication beacon adjacent to the physical entity transmits a second beacon signal containing the web address and a customized token encrypted using the key. The beacon receiver receives the second beacon signal and uses the key to decrypt the customized token. A web browser in the client system sends a second request having the web address and the customized token to the web server system if the beacon receiver can decrypt the customized token with the key. A method of authenticating locations of clients accessing a web server system is also described.

Location authentication of requests to a web server system linked to a physical entity

A method of providing an embedded web server for a device is described. The device is of a particular device platform and is required to run a web application. The method includes the step of providing a web server class library and a virtual machine class library. The web server class library and the virtual machine class library include classes suitable for different web applications. The method also includes the step of identifying a particular web application to be run on the device. The libraries and the web application are then passed through a compiler to select from the web server class library and the virtual machine class library classes required to run the web application in the device to form the web server. This makes the web server an application-specific web server which requires minimized storage space from the device when embedded in the device. A system for providing an application-specific embedded web server for a device is also described.

Providing an embedded application specific web server

A web access mechanism in a device is described. The web access mechanism includes at least an object that includes a plurality of functions of the device. The object includes a unique name that identifies the object and a web page that provides an interface to the object. The object also includes a plurality of properties, each of which can represent an interface to one of the functions of the object. The web access mechanism also includes a web core engine that calls one of the functions of the object to be loaded and executed in the web core engine in accordance with a request that contains the unique name of the object and the property name of the function. A method of invoking one of the functions in the web access mechanism is also described.

Object-oriented web server architecture suitable for various types of devices

Web access functionality is embedded in a device to enable low cost widely accessible and enhanced user interface functions for the device. A web server in the device provides access to the user interface functions for the device through a device web page. A network interface in the device enables access to the web page by a web browser such that a user of the web browser accesses the user interface functions for the device through the web page.
