The invention relates generally to methods of monitoring and controlling the processing of blood and blood samples, particularly the separation of blood and blood samples into its components with a two-dimensional optical measurement and control device. The method may comprise the steps of providing a blood processing system comprising a density centrifuge blood processing system and an elutriation blood processing system; filling the elutriation blood processing system with a desired component; measuring a cellular flux of cells entering the elutriation blood processing system with a two-dimensional optical control system; and flushing the elutriation blood processing system.

A method and apparatus for improving blood flow to an ischemic region (e.g., myocardial ischemia) a patient is provided. An ultrasonic transducer is positioned proximate to the ischemic region. Ultrasonic energy is applied at a frequency at or above 1 MHz to create one or more thermal lesions in the ischemic region of the myocardium. The thermal lesions can have a gradient of sizes. The ultrasound transducer can have a curved shape so that ultrasound energy emitted by the transducer converges to a site within the myocardium, to create a thermal lesion without injuring the epicardium or endocardium.

An extracorporeal blood processing system having a centrifugal rotor, a control system, a plurality of peristaltic pumps, and a removable tubing circuit wherein blood components can be processed. A pump-balancing process, implemented by the control system, causes selected pumps to fill and empty a reservoir in the tubing circuit. Ratios of displaced volume per pump revolution or other pumping action can be used by the control system to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the donation process. The pump-balancing process may be performed during priming or set-up of the blood processing system or during an actual donation.

The invention relates to an apparatus and method for imaging and mapping various structures located at a target area within a patient's lumen using conventional IVUS technology. The mapped images are used to accurately determine and control the location of the device within the lumen relative to the target area and/or target site. Once the drug delivery device is properly positioned within the lumen, additional ultrasonic images are generated and used to control the position and depth of penetration of a retractable needle of the device. Needle position can be precisely determined, both in relationship to the device as well as the target site for drug delivery. This allows accurate delivery of drug to the target site and, thus, enhanced treatment capabilities.

A medical assembly is used to deliver a therapeutic substance to a treatment area. Methods of coating an implantable device and a system for performing such methods are disclosed. An embodiment of the method includes applying a coating substance to the surface of an implantable device, and rotating the implantable device in a centrifuge. The method can uniformly coat the implantable device with the coating substance and to remove unwanted accumulations of coating substance entrained between struts or crevices in the implantable device body. This system is applicable to methods for coating intraluminal stents, synthetic grafts, and stent coverings with therapeutic compositions comprising therapeutic agents mixed with a polymeric matrix and a solvent.

The invention relates to an apparatus and method for locating and positioning a medical device in a patient. The catheter based drug delivery device uses ultrasound imaging technology to facilitate tracking of the catheter as it is maneuvered through the body of a patient. The device includes a secondary body portion and a main body portion that are in signal communication with each other. Ultrasound signals generated from and received by the device are transmitted to an intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) system. An image of the structures surrounding and including the device is displayed on the IVUS system.
