Handling writing new data includes creating a journal entry that points to a first storage location containing old data to be replaced by the new data, where the journal entry is maintained after writing the new data, allocating new storage space having a second storage location, and writing the new data to the new storage space at the second storage location. The storage space may be provided by at least one storage device. Allocating new storage space may include remapping a switch coupled to the at least one storage device. The new data may be written by a host coupled to the switch. The switch may present the host with a logical storage area that is created by the switch mapping to different locations of the at least one storage device. The mapping may be transparent to the host. The switch may include at least one processor and a corresponding memory. The journal entry may be part of a journal that is stored in the memory. The storage space may correspond to a disk array storage device. The journal entry may be stored in the disk array storage device. The journal entry may be stored outside the disk array storage device. Allocating new storage space may include remapping a switch coupled to the disk array storage device and where the journal entry is stored on the switch. Each of the journal entries also includes a time stamp and/or a result of writing the data.

Continuous data backup

A method, device and computer product suitable for performing an analysis on a Grid Computer Network (GCN) is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of representing selected ones of a plurality of components and a relationship among the components in the GCN, providing a mapping between a plurality of events and a plurality of observable events occurring among the components, wherein the mapping is represented as a value associating each event with each observable event, and determining at least one likely causing event based on at least one of the plurality of observable events by determining a measure between each of a plurality of values associated with the plurality of observable events and the plurality of causing events. The step of representing the GCN, comprises the steps of creating at least one non-specific representation of the selected components, wherein the non-specific representations are selected from the group consisting of ComputeElement, GridService and GridServiceInstance, and creating at least one non-specification representation of relations along which the events propagate amongst the selected components, wherein the representations of relations are selected from the group consisting of ComposedOf, Part of, HostedBy, and HostsServices. Also disclosed is an apparatus comprising a processor and a computer program product providing computer instruction to a computing system for executing the method steps described herein.

Method and apparatus for analyzing and problem reporting in grid computing networks

Described are techniques used in connection with providing continuous data backups of primary storage. A first technique uses distributed partial journals and a copy of the primary storage. A distributed partial journal is used for each input port. The partial journals are periodically incorporated into a main journal in accordance with a time stamp for the data modification recorded in each partial journal entry. A second technique, a copy on write, uses the distributed partial journals without requiring a copy of the primary storage. For each write to an address, the current contents of the address is journaled before the address on primary storage is updated.

A method, system and computer product for performing a system analysis of a surveillance network containing a plurality of components. The method comprises the steps of representing selected ones of the plurality of components, providing a mapping between a plurality of observable events and a plurality of causing events occurring in components, wherein the observable events are at least associated with each of the at least one components, and determining at least one likely causing event based on at least one of the plurality of observable events by determining a measure between each of a plurality of values associated with the plurality of observable events and the plurality of causing events.
