An all mechanically controlled, non-venting pressure control system for liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen cryogenic tanks that requires no electrical control while managing disparate, non-stoichiometric reactant boil-off rates is provided. The pressure control system allows for the passive and repeatable stoichiometric consumption of hydrogen and oxygen boil-off from cryogenic tanks to form liquid water, while preventing the liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen cryogenic tanks from overpressurizing and venting to the external environment. More particularly, in response to an overpressure condition in a first reactant reservoir, a backpressure regulator is opened, providing the overpressure first reactant to a fuel cell or other consumer, and providing a pilot signal to open a supply line from a second reactant reservoir to the consumer. Whether the second reactant is supplied from the second reactant reservoir as gas or a liquid is determined based on the pressure within the second reactant reservoir.

Systems and methods for passively controlling pressure within a cryogenic storage tank

Embodiments of the disclosed invention relate to providing cooling to instruments or other components. More particularly, hydrogen from a store is provided to pre-cool helium contained within a closed loop refrigeration circuit. Helium pre-cooled by the hydrogen, for example after expansion of the hydrogen in an expansion valve, is itself passed through an expansion valve, and applied to a heat load. The helium can be circulated through the refrigeration circuit using a compressor. The hydrogen used for pre-cooling the helium can be from a store of hydrogen that also provides fuel to a hydrogen consumer, for example for propulsion of a vehicle carrying the cooling system or for the production of electrical power. A hydrogen consumer can also be provided with hydrogen that has first been used to pre-cool the helium refrigeration circuit.

Hybrid liquid-hydrogen and helium cryocooler systems and methods

Gas flow is controlled to a feed gas consuming device depending on whether a contaminant gas is present. In one embodiment, hydrogen gas flow from a hydrogen gas generator to a hydrogen consuming device, such as a fuel cell, gas chromatograph or a flame ionization detector, is terminated when there is chemical contaminant breakthrough in the hydrogen gas flow. The apparatus relates to the use of a sensor for detecting a predetermined concentration of a chemical contaminant such as ammonia. In one embodiment the apparatus terminates the gas flow when a concentration of ammonia in the gas flow corresponds to a breakthrough (e.g., approximately in the range of 2.0% or greater). The apparatus prevents the ammonia-contaminated hydrogen from disabling such a hydrogen consuming device that would have otherwise received the contaminated gas flow. The apparatus terminates such a hydrogen contaminated gas flow by exposing a breakthrough detection material to the gas flow, wherein this material is substantially only reactive to concentrations of a predetermined contaminant (e.g., ammonia) for terminating the gas flow when such concentrations are indicative of a breakthrough of the contaminant. For instance, such a material may undergo a readily discernible change when in the presence of at least a predetermined concentration of the contaminant corresponding to a breakthrough. Such a discernible change in the breakthrough detection material may be, e.g., one or more of: a change in volume, density, opacity, color and/or electrical conductivity or potential. The 20 detection material may be used in series with other substances that chemically and physically capture impurities in the gas flow until the detection material reacts, stopping the flow of hydrogen to the hydrogen consuming device.

Controlling the flow of hydrogen and ammonia from a hydrogen generator during a breakthrough with hydrated copper (II) chloride expansion

Controlling the flow of hydrogen and ammonia from a hydrogen generator during a breakthrough with hydrated copper (II) chloride trap

In accordance with the present invention, a system for separating gas and liquid phases from a mixed phase system is provided. Furthermore, the present invention provides for the reliable separation of liquid and gas phases, regardless of the orientation of the system with respect to a gravitational field, and in low or zero gravity environments. The system of the present invention generally provides a reservoir having a variable volume that is formed from a gas permeable, hydrophobic, microporous, polymer material. Material confined within the reservoir is maintained under pressure, to expel any gases introduced to the interior of the reservoir as part of a mixed phase inlet stream. The liquid phase component of the mixed phase inlet stream may be removed from the reservoir through an outlet located within the reservoir volume.

Orientation insensitive combined liquid reservoir and gas/liquid separator

A method and apparatus for maintaining fuel cell cathode air quality are provided. In particular, the method and the apparatus of the present invention provide air filtration that excludes liquids and solids from a fuel cell enclosure. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the fuel cell enclosure can withstand being submerged in water, without allowing contaminants to enter the fuel cell enclosure. The depth at which the fuel cell could be submerged is dependant upon the pore size of the filter membrane. The present invention provides a filter having a gas permeable, hydrophobic, microporous polymer film to exclude material detrimental to the operation of the fuel cell. The invention allows a fuel cell apparatus to be provided that is capable of being submerged in water and exposed to environmental contaminants without damage to the fuel cell.

Method and apparatus for maintenance of fuel cell cathode air quality with breathable hydrophobic membrane air filter

A hydrogen generating apparatus that includes a reactant with a vapor phase at greater than atmospheric pressure. The apparatus includes a tank for housing the reactant, such as ammonia. Ammonia communicates with a reactor having a solid reactant, such as lithium aluminum tetrahydride. A check valve is located between the tank and the reactor and is used to control the flow of ammonia to the reactor. Heat generated by the reaction is useful in raising the temperature of the reactant in the tank. The reactor can also include a gas flow enhancing material that facilitates gas flow through the reactor. A filter and getters are employed downstream of the reactor to remove unwanted solids and impurities from the hydrogen gas stream.
