In general, a mobile unit for communicating with other mobile units assigned to a group within a Multipoint Voice Network ('MVN') having a plurality of groups is shown. The mobile unit may include a time division multiple access ('TDMA') transmitter, a TDMA receiver, and a controller. The TDMA transmitter is enabled to transmit a set of multiple carrier frequencies, where the TDMA transmitter is configured to transmit on one frequency chosen from a sub-set of multiple carrier frequencies from the set of multiple carrier frequencies. The sub-set of multiple carrier frequencies corresponds to the group to which the mobile unit is assigned. The TDMA receiver is configured to receive and demodulate the sub-set of multiple carrier frequencies and the controller configures the TDMA receiver to receive and demodulate the sub-set of multiple carrier frequencies that is assigned to the group. A switch may be utilized to set time slots for the TDMA transmitter and the TDMA receiver.

An integrated point-to-point microwave radio frequency unit/antenna has a housing, a microwave antenna affixed to the front face of the housing, and a microwave radio frequency transceiver electronics package within the housing. The transceiver electronics package includes a circuit board having transmitter and receiver intermediate frequency processors. The transceiver electronics package further includes a microwave transmitter and a microwave receiver, each utilizing monolithic microwave integrated circuit architecture. The signals of the microwave transmitter and microwave receiver are preferably of different frequencies and are diplexed for communication with the antenna.

An inverted boxhorn antenna array comprising a power divider that is constructed from a single metal piece and a flat metal sheet that is fastened to a rear surface of the power divider. The power divider is fabricated using a variety of waveguide junctions coupled between substantially identical inverted boxhorn subarrays. The junctions includes a central magic tee junction for coupling energy from an input port into the power divider. Alternating folded shunt and folded series tee junctions are used to transfer power coupled by way of the central series junction to the inverted boxhorn subarrays. Specially dimensioned folded shunt and series tee junctions are used in the inverted boxhorn subarrays. Waveguide matched loads are bonded in waveguides between each of the inverted boxhorn radiators of the subarrays. A fully functional antenna assembly includes a radome cover, a quadrature correction plate 18a, and a twist polarizer disposed in front of radiating elements of the inverted boxhorn antenna array.

A frequency upconversion circuit in a millimeter wave radio transmitter uses a low frequency synthesizer and a parallel frequency mixing and multiplication network for converting a low frequency signal to a millimeter wave radio frequency (RF) signal. A frequency downconversion circuit in a millimeter wave radio receiver uses a low frequency synthesizer and a parallel frequency mixing and multiplication network for converting a millimeter wave RF signal to a low frequency signal.

The radio frequency unit of a millimeter wave terrestrial radio includes a housing with a front face and a back face, a microwave radio frequency transceiver electronics package within the housing, an antenna affixed to the front face of the housing, and appropriate signal connections and feeds. One portion of a dovetail support structure, preferably the male dovetail fitting, is affixed to the back face of the housing. The other portion of the dovetail support structure, preferably the female dovetail fitting, is mounted to a mounting structure. The dovetail support structure allows the radio frequency unit to be readily mounted to and demounted from the mounting structure. A reference plane defined between the radio frequency unit and the mounting structure allows the radio frequency unit to be precisely oriented relative to the mounting structure.

An integrated point-to-point microwave radio frequency unit/antenna system includes a microwave transceiver/antenna unit, a housing support element affixed to the microwave transceiver/antenna unit, and a mounting structure support element engaged to the housing support element. The mounting structure support element includes a fixedly adjustable ball-and-socket element, with either the ball or the socket affixed to the housing support element and the other affixed to an attachment structure. The mounting structure support element permits the microwave transceiver/antenna unit to be adjusted in three degrees of freedom.

A waveguide evanescent mode filter is integrated with a monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) by forming both the MMIC circuitry and the waveguide filter on a single substrate that forms a common ground plane for both elements. The waveguide has a superstructure with an interior recess that is contoured to provide a desired cutoff frequency. The underlying portion of the ground plane can form the lower portion of the waveguide itself, and can also be contoured to define the cutoff frequency. Adjustable attenuation is provided by a resistive card that can be inserted by different amounts into the waveguide.

A millimeter-wave, planar, balanced mixer having optical means for coupling radio frequency waves to the mixer circuit. The optical coupling means may comprise a dielectric lens and particularly a spherical dielectric lens. The spherical lens not only provides a gain for the radio frequency energy but overcomes the severe tolerance requirements and size restrictions encountered in fabrication of conventional waveguides for millimeter waves in the range of 100 to 300 GHz.

Disclosed is a millimeter wave integrated circuit balanced mixer including wo signal ports, a local oscillator and an input signal port, coupled to a pair of solid state millimeter wave mixer diodes by means of an image guide 3db hybrid signal coupler and a pair of mixer cavities formed from a wafer of boron nitride whose bottom surface is metallized and soldered onto a metal substrate having a metal surface defining an image plane. The signal coupler consists of two curved lengths of boron nitride image guide having a spacing therebetween in the form of a thin slot for providing the proper coupling factor. The cavities formed in the boron nitride wafer are metallized and are configured to receive one like end of the respective image waveguides. The opposite ends of the image waveguides are tapered and are located in image guide to wavelength transitions at the respective signal ports. IF output signal lines in the form of metallized lines are located on the end portion of the image guides in the respective cavities for coupling to an IF amplifier.

The specification describes a dielectric image guide harmonic pumped mixer circuit wherein two dielectric image guide strips of different chosen cross-sectional configurations are mounted on a metallic substrate which forms the image plane for the mixer circuit. These image guide strips have impedance matching tapered ends which extend into a central mixer cavity region on the substrate. A pair of reverse poled mixer diodes are mounted in the central cavity region to receive respectively RF incoming signals from one dielectric image guide and local oscillator signals from the other dielectric image guide. Differential currents generated in the two diodes cause the second harmonic of the local oscillator signal frequency to mix with the incoming RF signal frequency. An intermediate frequency (IF) signal current produced thereby is conductively coupled from the mixer cavity into IF signal processing electronics. Advantageously, the image plane substrate surface is configured to receive, in a coplanar fashion, a modular circuit board containing electronics such as an IF amplifier, mixer, and detector which in turn are conductively coupled to the mixer diodes by a metallic strip or the like in a compact, substantially planar-upper surface configuration.

In an optical wavelength meter, the wavelength of light to be measured, such as that obtained from a CW or pulsed laser, is directed through a tunable grating monochromator, serving as a bandpass filter, for passing light within the selected bandpass and determining, to the lowest degree of resolution, the wavelength of the light to be measured. Thence, the light is directed sequentially through a plurality of Fabry-Perot etalon interferometers of increasing degree of resolution. The interference patterns are sequentially directed onto a spatial detector. The radii of the first and second rings of the respective interference patterns are measured to derive fractional fringe order measurements of successively higher resolution, such that the wavelength of the light to be measured is determined in successively increasing steps of higher resolution. In a typical example, utilizing three Fabry-Perot etalons the wavelength of the light to be measured at, for example, 6328 angstroms is determined to be an absolute accuracy of .+-.200 megahertz.
