A circuit breaker includes a housing, separable contacts, an operating mechanism structured to open and close the separable contacts, a power conductor comprising a first conductor and a second reverse loop conductor, the second reverse loop conductor carrying one of the separable contacts; and a split core slot motor. The split core slot motor comprises a first slot motor portion having a number of coupling points, and a second slot motor portion having a number of corresponding coupling points. The coupling points of the first slot motor portion engage the corresponding coupling points of the second slot motor portion to form the split core slot motor. Both of the slot motor portions cooperate to form a base of the split core slot motor. The base is disposed between the first conductor and the second reverse loop conductor.

A contact assembly for a circuit breaker includes a fixed contact, a movable contact, and a movable contact arm. The movable contact arm includes a first end carrying the movable contact, a second end, and a pivot portion proximate the second end. A moving arm portion extends from the first end toward the pivot portion. The moving arm portion has a width, an upper edge, a lower edge, and a height defined by the distance between the upper edge and the lower edge. In response to a trip condition, the movable contact separates from the fixed contact and the movable contact arm pivots open at an angular opening velocity. The height of the moving arm portion of the movable contact arm is at least four times the width of the moving arm portion, thus minimizing the moment-of-inertia of the movable contact arm, and increasing the angular opening velocity.

A circuit breaker contact assembly includes a line conductor having a folded back fixed contact end, a fixed contact mounted on the contact end, and a movable contact arm having an inner edge and first and second ends. A movable contact is mounted on the first end. The movable contact arm is pivotable about the second end between a closed position in which the inner edge extends adjacent the contact end with the movable contact in contact with the fixed contact to form a reverse current loop, and an open position in which the movable contact is pivoted away from the fixed contact. The contact arm includes a first inner longitudinal member extending along the inner edge and a second outer longitudinal member. The first inner longitudinal member has a higher electrical conductivity than the second outer longitudinal member, which has a higher shear strength and a lower specific density.

Contact assembly

The support for the moving contact of a circuit breaker has a piston that is driven by arc gases generated by initial separation of the contacts through magnetic repulsion to rapidly open the contacts. A pair of telescoping shield sleeves that have aligned openings through which the moving contact is extended to close with the fixed contact are oppositely driven transversely to piston movement by the arc gases to cut off the arc.

A moving contact assembly for a high-current interruption electric power switching apparatus has an inner carrier for the contact fingers that is rigidly held in a withstand position in an outer carrier by a spring biased cam follower pin engaging a cam profile on the inner carrier and configured to positively seat an inner carrier stop against an outer carrier stop on the outer carrier and to rapidly drive the inner carrier to a blow open position in response to a fault. The cam profile has an extended width divided between spaced apart cam profile sections to absorb the high closing and withstand forces. An abutment on the outer carrier resists bowing of the cam follower pin between the cam profile sections. Complementary convex and concave partial cylindrical surfaces on the inner carrier and a gas shield on the moving assembly carrier body maintain an arc gas seal during blow open.

Blow open moving contact assembly for electric power switching apparatus with a very high current interruption rating

An arc hood includes a housing having a first chamber with two ends, a top and a bottom having an opening, and a smaller second chamber disposed on the top of the first chamber. The smaller second chamber includes two ends, a top and a bottom. Each of the ends of the second chamber have an opening, are disposed above the top of the first chamber, and are recessed from a corresponding one of the ends of the first chamber. The chambers define a passageway between the opening of the bottom of the first chamber and the openings of the ends of the second chamber. One or more baffles are within the housing and are disposed between the opening of the bottom of the first chamber and the openings of the ends of the second chamber. A seal is disposed about the opening of the bottom of the first chamber.

A shorting switch includes a vacuum switch having fixed and movable contact assemblies and a driven member. A spring cover tube and bushing mount the driven member for linear movement along a path substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the movable contact assembly. The driven member moves the movable contact assembly between open and closed circuit positions. A compression spring has a compressed state and a released state, which moves the driven member and movable contact assembly to the closed circuit position. A release bolt has an opening therein and is coupled to the driven member to normally maintain the compression spring in the compressed state. A charge is disposed in the opening of the release bolt and is actuated to fracture the release bolt and release the compression spring to the released state. First and second terminals are respectively electrically interconnected with the fixed and movable contact assemblies.

Shorting switch and system to eliminate arcing faults in power distribution equipment

A current-limiting device includes a current-limiting material, such as a molded thermoset material, and first and second electrodes structured for carrying current through the current-limiting material. The first electrode electrically engages a first portion of the current-limiting material, and the second electrode electrically engages a second portion of the current-limiting material. A mechanism provides a non-uniform pressure distribution between one or both of the first and second electrodes and the current-limiting material.
