Instruments are provided for shifting elongate members, such as spinal rods, with respect to coupling members of spinal fixation systems. The instruments include a low friction drive mechanism having one or more rolling elements that ride along a helical groove or track in order to transform rotational movement of a drive member into linear shifting of a reducer member that shifts the elongate member. A one-way locking mechanism may be provided to selectively prevent unwanted counter-rotation of the low friction drive mechanism. The one-way locking mechanism may include annular ratchet teeth arranged on the exterior of the drive member and a ratchet pawl located adjacent to the teeth and selectively engageable therewith.

Low friction rod persuader

A minimally invasive and open surgery surgical system for implanting spinal screw assemblies to be connected by a spinal rod is disclosed. In one form, the system includes an improved tool device for inserting a cap insert into an initial and final locking of a screw assembly and securing a spinal rod inserted through an incision to a vertebra. In another form, the system also includes a screw fixation system that allows greater variability in thread diameter for orthopedic implant for in the spine, iliac crest, or bones.

Spinal rod and screw securing apparatus and method

An implant device includes a pair of hook devices and an elongate guide device. The hook devices are configured to be disposed between and engage adjacent vertebral bodies. The elongate guide device is connected to the hook devices and allows for relative movement of at least one of the hook devices to adjust for the geometries of the vertebral surfaces to be engaged by the hook devices.

Intervertebral implant devices and methods for insertion thereof

A medical instrument apparatus and method is provided to insert and release medical implants. This invention pertains generally to medical instruments and more specifically to spinal implant insertion instruments for spinal fixation systems. The insertion instrument may provide a positive locking and unlocking actuator, preferably in the form of a lever, which ensures that the pedicle screw and yoke assembly is either mechanically locked to the insertion instrument or unlocked to the insertion instrument. The positive locking and unlocking actuator of the insertion instrument eliminates guesswork for the surgeon because the surgeon can readily know if the pedicle screw and yoke assembly is attached to the insertion instrument or not. Superelastic components may also be included to shift components in a first direction and pull components under superelastic tension in a second direction for increased holding force.

Insertion instrument for a spinal fixation system

A medical instrument apparatus and method is provided for positioning and securing a spinal rod to a coupling device anchored to a vertebra. A reducer assembly shifts the spinal rod into place within the coupling device and a cap inserter assembly shifts a cap member into locking engagement with the coupling device to secure the spinal rod therein.

Spinal rod reducer and cap insertion apparatus

Instruments and methods are provided for securing a spinal rod in one or more coupling devices secured to the spine by one or more anchor members. The instruments include members for grasping the coupling device and members for shifting one or more elements along a linear path to fix the position of an anchor member and/or fix the position of the rod with respect to the vertebra.

Rod locking instrument

A spinal fixation system is provided that includes a coupling member and a locking device that is operable to fix an elongate member in the coupling member. There is also provided insertion instruments configured to install and remove various components of the spinal fixation system. In one form, the coupling member includes opposing side wall portions having a resilient portion on at least one of the side wall portions that cooperates with the locking device for being inserted into the coupling member via resilient flexing of the resilient portion. The coupling member and locking device also preferably include cooperating structure therebetween to define a plurality of distinct positions of the locking device in the coupling member.
