A method of forming a multilayer coating on a substrate is provided. The multilayer coating exhibits reduced strike-in and mottling. The method includes the steps of providing the substrate including a primer disposed thereon, applying a basecoat composition on the primer, applying a clearcoat composition on the basecoat composition, and curing the basecoat composition and the clearcoat composition to form the multilayer coating on the substrate. The basecoat composition includes a film forming resin, a pigment, and about 5% to about 75% by weight on binder of a cyclic lactone modified branched acrylic polymer having a hydroxyl monomer content of about 1% to 65% by weight, all or part of which has been reacted with a cyclic lactone, and having a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of about 10,000 to about 150,000 g/mol.

Method of forming a coating on a substrate

Acrylic polymers, 1K coating compositions including the same, and multilayer coating systems including a topcoat layer formed from the 1K coating compositions are provided herein. In an embodiment, a 1K coating composition includes an acrylic polymer having a nominal Tg of at least 25&#xb0; C. and a melamine crosslinker. The acrylic polymer includes a free radical-polymerized backbone and pendant chains bonded thereto. A first pendant chain of the acrylic polymer includes a first segment and a second segment. The first segment includes an ester linkage and a secondary hydroxyl group. The second segment is connected to the first segment and includes an ester linkage and a branched hydrocarbon chain. A second pendant chain of the acrylic polymer includes a primary hydroxyl group or a urethane-containing group formed therefrom.

The present disclosure is directed to an anticrater additive that is useful for providing a smooth surface to a cured layer of an electrocoating composition on a substrate. The anticrater additive comprises the reaction product of a polyisocyanate with an acrylic polymer having one isocyanate reactive functional group. The acrylic polymer can be an acrylic polymer that is terminated with a chain transfer agent. Also disclosed is an electrocoat composition comprising the anticrater additive and a substrate coated with a cured layer of the electrocoat composition.

This invention relates to a method for forming a multi-layer coating on a vehicle body, comprised of applying primer coating, base coating, and clear coat layers in a wet-on-wet-on-wet manner, and simultaneously curing the applied three layers together in a single baking step. The present process is directed to preparation of addition polymers in diluents that are subsequently reactive in coatings during cure, instead of in traditional hydrocarbon solvents.
