Apparatus and related methods for reacting a natural oil with a short chain alcohol in the presence of an alkaline catalyst and mesh to produce biodiesel, significantly decreasing the amount of time for the glycerol byproduct to settle out of the reaction mixture. The process for the production of biodiesel includes providing animal or vegetable oil to create a first component, combining a short chain alcohol with a strong base to create a second component, and combining the first and second components together in the presence of a mesh, such that the mesh is in contact with the combined components. The combined compositions represent a reaction mixture that undergo a transesterification reaction and produce fatty acid methyl ester biodiesel and also a glycerol byproduct. The mesh material that is present during the transesterification reaction decreases the amount of time required for the glycerol byproduct to settle out of the reaction mixture.

Mechanically enhanced separation of reaction products in biodiesel production

Chlorosilane-containing process streams are treated by vaporizing the process stream, contacting the vaporized process stream with an alkaline medium in a scrubber, the scrubbing liquid being maintained at a pH of 9-13 by introduction of alkaline medium, and feeding the scrubbing medium to a waste treatment plant containing at least one mixing tank in which the pH is adjusted to the range of 7-9 by addition of mineral acid, separating solids by means of a centrifuge, and isolating separated solids.

Apparatus and process for treating liquids containing chlorosilanes

Method and apparatus for monitoring data traffic through a cable data network in order to guarantee a minimum and maximum bandwidth and burst length. Traffic statistics are kept as credits that are only updated as needed. Each cable modem in the network is assigned a limit on the maximum amount of traffic that it may transmit and receive depending on the service level that the subscriber has purchased. When that limit is exceeded, traffic for that modem will no longer allowed to pass through the system.

Data traffic control in a data modem system

A regenerative shaft kiln having at least two vertical shafts and a plurality of lances for introducing fuel into the kiln, with one or more sensor provided proximate a plurality of the lances, each of the sensors producing a first output signal having a magnitude and corresponding to a physical parameter of the kiln adjacent the sensor. Observation of the operating conditions of individual lances enables adjustments to the fuel feed via individual lances to avoid equipment damage and to improve kiln performance.

Method and apparatus for controlling kiln

An annular, vertical shaft kiln comprising a cascading process path with varying cross sectional area, in which the coarse charge particulants tend to follow the longer path near the walls as does the gas being injected into the mid-region of the kiln, while the fine particulants tend to take the straighter, shorter path near the middle, thus resulting in an even calcination of varying diameters of charge particulants. The briquetted fuel which may be made of hazardous waste, is heated slowly to safely destroy such wastes in the processing. Because of the limited range of the ratio of the smallest to the largest diameter of the charge particulants, the charge particulants are sorted through wire mesh screens into bins according to diameter. The kiln's computer then receives data on the process at various points along the path and controls the process by regulating the charge particulants injection, the rate of the fuel injection and/or the speed of the air injection.

Lime kilns

A fused, hardened composition containing CaO, MgO and Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 for use in purifying molten metal during steel production and a method of making the same. The composition can be made up of electric arc furnace dust and lime or dolo-lime fines which would normally be wasted. The mixture of ingredients is hydrated, molded into a uniform size and carbonated using a CO.sub.2 containing gas and then heated so as to produce a molded non-dusting composition which dissolves quickly and uniformly in the slag process. Components such as PbO from the furnace dust which normally make slag a hazardous waste under environmental regulations, are reacted within the molded composition to form stable ceramic spinels. These spinels are not water soluble and therefore not subject to strict disposal requirements.

Flux material for steelmaking

A solid fuel comprised of waste materials and a method of using the same are disclosed. The composition is made up of a heating value component, a neutralizing component and a nuisance waste component. Each of these components is a material which is readily available as a waste. Each component may be either solid or liquid, however, the total composition may not be more than 40% liquid. The nuisance waste component is a compound or mixture of compounds which often present disposal problems for industry. The nuisance wastes may include chlorinated hydrocarbons such as polychlorinated biphenyls, sulfur containing compounds, biological wastes and/or metals which are converted to stable and more easily disposed of compounds as the fuel briquette is burned in a kiln or furnace so that an inexpensive fuel is created from the waste products.
