An insulating system for pipes is provided which includes at least two different types of pipe insulation, wherein each pipe insulation is a pipe jacket formed by two mating sections, a first section and a second section with each section having a mating surface, wherein further when the two mating sections are put together with the mating surface of the first section exactly abutting the mating surface of the second section, they form a tubular structure having a bore which is a suitable size to receive a pipe. Of the three possible types of pipe insulation available, insulation A, insulation B, and insulation C, each pipe insulation type is formulated to insulate pipes having a different surface temperature, and yet pipe insulations A, B, and C each have identical outer diameters.

A pipe cladding composition which is a phosphate ceramic permeating a non-woven fibrous network. The overall thickness of the sheet is between about 5 and about 20 mils. The phosphate ceramic permeates the fibrous network and extends beyond the fibrous network only up to a maximum thickness of about 3 mils across each side of the sheet. The sheets are prepared using wet reaction mixtures which produce phosphate ceramics. These reaction mixtures are mixed and pressed into the non-woven fibrous network which forms a wet sheet that is then cured to provide the cladding material.

Method of producing phosphate ceramic pipe cladding

A pipe cladding composition is described which is a phosphate ceramic permeating a non-woven fibrous network. The overall thickness of the sheet is between about 5 and about 20 mils. The phosphate ceramic permeates the fibrous network and extends beyond the fibrous network only up to a maximum thickness of about 3 mils across each side of the sheet. The sheets are prepared using wet reaction mixtures which produce phosphate ceramics. These reaction mixtures are mixed and pressed into the non-woven fibrous network which forms a wet sheet that is then cured to provide the cladding material.

Calcium aluminum magnesium phosphate ceramic hard tiles and processes for them are described. The tiles have a density in excess of about 110 pounds per cubic foot, a curl value less than about 20 mils and a flexural strength of at least about 2500 pounds per square inch. To prepare the hard tiles 100 parts (by wt.) of an aluminum phosphate-phosphoric acid solution is mixed with at least 5 parts magnesium oxide and 50-110 parts wollastonite. If the acid has more than 15% by weight water, then mica or vermiculite is added.

Phosphate reactive sheets and substrates can be prepared using wet-laying and dry-laying techniques. The wet or dry-laid composition contains calcium silicate and a non-reactive matrix of either fiber or a mixture of fiber and a binder. The matrix is used in an amount effective to hold the wet or dry-laid material together. At a desired time such phosphate reactive substrate compositions can be contacted with aqueous solutions of phosphoric acid. A metal oxide selected from aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, and calcium oxide must be present in either the substrate, the solution, or both. After the solution contacts the substrate, a reaction takes place within the matrix to form a rigid article.

Processes are described for producing strong, durable fiberous phosphate ceramic structures. Stronger fiberous phosphate ceramic structures can be produced by applying higher pressures during the reaction of phosphoric acid, a metal oxide selected from the group consisting of zinc oxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, and aluminum oxide; and calcium silicate within a matrix of the fiber, or the fiber and a binder.

The present invention relates to laminated materials which are constructed using layers of reinforcing and/or non-reinforcing materials in combination with layers of a composition which is known in the art to provide water-resistant phosphate ceramic materials. In a preferred embodiment, the products are fire-resistant and intumescent when exposed to heat or direct flame, and they produce little or no smoke. Nevertheless, these products are tough, durable and suitable to provide a decorative and pleasing appearance.
