A surgical instrument end effector includes a first jaw configured to receive a staple cartridge and a second jaw that includes an anvil having a plurality of staple forming pockets. The first and second jaws are operable to clamp and staple tissue positioned therebetween. A tip member is movably disposed at a distal end of the anvil and is configured to toggle relative to the anvil between a first discrete position and a second discrete position. The tip member in the first discrete position is oriented angularly toward the first jaw, and the tip member in the second discrete position is oriented angularly away from the first discrete position.

An apparatus includes a first jaw () and a second jaw () that cooperate to clamp and staple tissue (). The second jaw includes a jaw body () and a distal tip () pivotable relative to the jaw body between a first discrete and a second discrete position. A projection () is defined by the other of the distal tip or the structure. A depth limiter that is configured to couple with first and second trocar cannulas having different diameters. The depth limiter includes first and second body portions. First and second body portions each include first and second gripping surfaces. The first and second body portions are pivotably coupled together and are movable between an open configuration and a closed configuration. In the open configuration, the first and second body portions are configured to allow for axial movement of the depth limiter relative to the first and second trocar cannulas. The first gripping surfaces of the first and second body portions are configured to restrict axial movement of the depth limiter relative to the first trocar cannula in the closed configuration. The second gripping surfaces of the first and second body portions are configured to restrict axial movement of the depth limiter relative to the second trocar cannula in the closed configuration.

A stapling assembly for a surgical instrument includes a body extending along a longitudinal axis and having an upper deck, a plurality of pockets extending through the upper deck for receiving respective staples and arranged in at least two longitudinal rows, a plurality of staple drivers, and a staple driver actuator. The stapling assembly also includes a plurality of pocket extenders extending upwardly from the upper deck. Each pocket extender has a respective top surface. The stapling assembly further includes at least one upwardly-facing surface configured to contact an adhesive of an adjunct for securing the adjunct to the stapling assembly. The at least one upwardly-facing surface is disposed at least partially between at least a portion of the upper deck and the top surfaces of the plurality of pocket extenders, and spans laterally at least partially across at least two longitudinal rows of the plurality of pockets.

An axially movable firing member is configured to move between a beginning position and an ending position by a first flexible drive member and a second flexible drive member. A firing member lock is configured to prevent the firing member from distally moving from the beginning position to the ending position unless an axially movable camming member in the staple cartridge that is supported in the first jaw is in a starting position.

The surgical end effector further comprising a staple cartridge removably seated in the cartridge jaw, wherein the staple cartridge is configured to slide along the longitudinal axis into the proximal channel portion of the cartridge jaw when the distal portion is in the open position.

A method for adjusting the operation of a clip applier using machine learning in a surgical suite is disclosed. The method comprises gathering data during surgical procedures, wherein the surgical procedures include the use of a clip applier comprising a crimping drive configured to be mechanically advanced through a crimping stroke. The method further comprises analyzing the gathered data to determine an appropriate operational adjustment of the clip applier and adjusting the operation of the clip applier to improve the operation of the clip applier.

A surgical instrument includes a body, a shaft assembly, an end effector, a clamp actuator, and a blade cooling system. The end effector has a clamp arm and an ultrasonic blade coupled with an ultrasonic transducer. The clamp arm is configured to selectively move from a first actuator position toward a second actuator position thereby directing movement of the clamp arm from the open position toward the closed position, respectively. The cooling system is operable to deliver fluid coolant to the ultrasonic blade to thereby cool the ultrasonic blade while the clamp actuator remains in the first actuator position.

The firing system comprising a motor and a driving member operably coupled to the motor. The motor is configured to cause the driving member to advance the sled to deploy the staples into tissue grasped by the surgical stapling instrument. The driving member is movable by the motor along a predefined firing path. The surgical stapling instrument further comprises a control circuit that is configured to detect a location of the sled along the firing path, and adjust a motor control program based on the location of the sled.
